MACHINE FOR PASTING, CUTTING, AND TRlMMlNG WALL-PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,473, dated July 26,1892.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS SrooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have lnvented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machines for Pasting, Cutting, and Trimming VVall-Paper, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines for trimming, cutting, and pasting wall-paper; and the objects of my invention are to provide a superior device of this character by means of which the pasting, trimming, and the cutting of the paper into lengths may be rapidly and effectively accomplished, to produce said device in a simple and reliable form, and to produce improvements in details of construction, which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view on a smaller scale than that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a portion of the paste-roll.

a represents a tank or paste-reservoir, which is preferably of an oblong form and has its upper side open. Rising from the opposite sides of the forward portion of the paste-tank a and secured thereto are two correspondinglyshaped frames a. The forward frame-arms a of said frames a extend, as shown, upwardly and forwardly, and have journaled between their upper and outer ends the shaft or spindle of a horizontal reel 1). which, as shown in the drawings, is mounted upon a shaft 0, which extends longitudinally through the center of said paste-cylinder, said shaft bearing in suitable internal disks which are rigidly supported within the cylinder. The periphery of this cylinder or roll 0 is covered by a suitable cloth strip 0 said cloth strip being secured thereon by having its ends tucked into the open ends of the cylinder c, where they are securely fastened by the insertion within the ends of said cylinder of plug-rings c, which are of such size as to enter the ends of the cylinder and press the inturned ends of the cloth 0 loosely against the inner surface of the cylinder. Above the paste-tank the arms a are provided with a slight forward bend, as indicated at a", and from saidforwardly-bent portions extend rearwardly short bearing-arms d, the inner ends of which are pivotally connected with said arms a and the outer ends of which are in vertical alignment with the shaft of the pastecylinder and form journal-bearings for the shaft (1' of a horizontal roll (1 the periphery of which is normallyin frictional contact with and rests upon the upper side of the cloth covered paste-roll 0. Extending between the cross-arms a. is a rod or bar f, which, as shown, is of a hexagonal form in cross-section. This hexagonal rod f is clamped by the jaws of two or more clutches f, each of these clutches consisting of two arms f f which are hinged or fulcrumed at f. The forward ends of these clutch-arms are bowed outwardly from each other, as shown, while the rear ends or jaws f f of said arms are adapted to bear against each other, as shown, each of said jaws being provided with a half-hexagonal recess in its clamping-face, which receives onehalf of the hexagonal rod f. The jaws are normally clamped upon said rod f by the action of the approximately V-shaped sp ringstri p f which is inserted between the flaring fingers or forward ends of the armsf f said spring having its ends secured to the inner sides and outer end portions of said arms f f The upper jaw f of the clutch f 'is extended upwardly, as shown, said upwardly-extending portion having pivoted thereto an arm g, which is approximately in the form of a bell-crank lever. The upwardly-extending portion of said bell-crank arm g has journaled between the bifurcated upper end thereof a circular trimming-knife or disk g, which is provided with sharpened edges, as shown. The forwardly-extending portion of the arm g has passing through its outer end portion a set-screw k, the lower end of which bears upon a spring-strip it, one end of said spring-strip being secured upon a shank of the jaw f at the base of its upward extension and the remaining end of said spring-strip bearing upon the upper side of the upper clutch-arm f near the outer end thereof. Each of the frame arms a has formed therewith an upwardly extending branch arm 1', said branch 2' projecting from that portion of the arm a to which is secured the rod f.

As shown in the drawings, I preferably provide the paste-tank a with a partition, as indicated at a, said partition extending throughout the length of said tank on the rear side of the paste-roll, thus forming a separate compartment a The operation of my machine is as follows: A roll m of wall-paper to be utilized is wound, as shown, upon the roll I) betweenthe disks b thereof, the latter servingas end bearings for the roll. From the under side of the roll of paper m the paper is carried to and mserted between the paste-roll c and feedingroll (1 then carried about the rear side of the latter and inward about the front side of the roll d", from which it may be pulled upwardly by a person standing upon a suitableelevation. As indicated at 'n, the tank a is partially filled with ordinary liquid paste. Pulling upon the upper end of the paper m will result, through the friction between the paper and rolls, of a rotation of the two rolls d and d when the frictional contact of the latter with the paste-roll will operate to rotate said paste-roll. As the paper is thus drawn from the rolls it is obvious that the entire width of the sheet is brought into contact with the paste upon the periphery of the roll 0, said paste being accumulated thereon by the rotation of said roll within the paste a. In order to trim or cut from the paper the unprinted edges thereof, the clutches f are turned upward to such position as to impart the necessary inclination to the knife-arms g required to bring the cutting edges of the knives g into contact with the paper m,which is on the roll (1. The degree of pressure of the knives g against the paper and. roll d may be increased or decreased by turning the set-screw 70,-so as to increase or decrease the pressure of the spring-strip It is obvious that any desired number of the clutches f may be employed and that they may be located at the desired points upon the rod f, thus admitting of strips of paper being cut into different widths, as desired. In order to throw the knives g out of engagement with the paper and roll d, the clutch-arms f 2 f may be clamped toward each other sufficiently to admit of the forward ends of the clutches being turned downward and the knife arm or bar g thereof being thereby carried forward. When a strip of paper of sufficient length has been pasted and trim med, as hereinbefore described, a pressure upon the handle i of the knife-bar i will result in a forward movement of the bracket 13 upon its pivotal c0nnection with the arms '5 and a resulting contact of the sharpened edge of the knife-disk i with the forward and upper side of the roll d or the paper thereon. By sliding the knife-bar 2' horizontally upon the portion i of the bracket 1' it willbe seen that the knifedisk i will be made to rotate and travel transversely across the paper m and result in a severing of the latter at the point of contact with said knife. It will thus be seen that the paper may be pasted, pulled upward between the rolls, trimmed, and severed into the desired lengths by my machine;
In order to prevent the accumulation of paste upon the end portions of the periphery of the roll d and prevent the trimmed edges of the paper which are severed by the knives g from becoming pasted thereto, I employ the scraping-plates a which are supported,

as hereinbefore described, upon the ends of the arms a. If desired,I may rotate the rolls by turning the crank 01 this method of drawing the paper through the rolls being preferable where short pieces of paperare to be pasted or trimmed.
When desired, I may elevate the roll d from contact with the paste-roll by causing the lugs 01 of the bearing-arms d to engage with the hook end of the catch 61 In case it is desired to prepare paper for papering a ceiling, it is obvious that the paper m may be drawn upward over the upper roll 6 and thence forwardly, Where it will be supported in the proper position for uniting with the ceiling.
The compartment a of the tank a will serve as a receptacle for the trimmings which fall from the roll (i From the construction herein shown and described it will be seen that the process of pa pering walls and ceilings will be greatly facilitated by the use of my device.
Having now fully described my invention,-
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wallpaper-preparing machine, the combination, with a paste-tank a, a roll-carrying frame arising therefrom, and a paperreel journaled in said frame, of a paste-roll journaled in said tank, a feed-roll d movably journaled, as described, above said paste-roll,
and a roll d journaled abovesaid feed-roll, substantially as described.
2. In a wall-paper-preparing machine, the combination, with a paste-tank a, a roll-carrying frame arising therefrom, a paper-reel journaled in said frame, and a paste-roll journaled in said tank, of a feed-roll d movably j ournaled, as described, above said pasteroll, a roll (1, journaled above said feed-roll, and one or more trimming-wheels g, having their cutting edges adj ustably supported against the periphery of the roll d", substan-v tially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a wallpaper-preparing machine, the combination, With a paste-tank a, a roll-carrying frame arising therefrom, a paper-reel journaled in said frame, and a paste-roll journaled in said tank, of a feed-roll d movably journaled, as described, above said pasteroll, a roll 61, journaled above said feed-roll, the hinged bracket 1' rising from the upper portion of the frame, a horizontally-sliding knife-block on said bracket, and a cutting disk or knife supported thereby, said disk being adapted to be made to bear upon the periphery of the roll 01, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
