Be it known that I, JAY V. PI-IlLLlPS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rochester, in the county of Haskell and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Hang ing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper hanging machines, and it has for its objects to provide a device of this class of simple and improved construction adapted to hold a roll of wall paper, to guide the paper over a trimming device and under a paste applying device, and said machine being also provided with a cutting device for severing the strip of paper after the same has been applied to the wall.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the in.- vention is better understood, the same consists in' the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a front view of a machine constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. F ig.'3 is a side elevation seen from the opposite side. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 6-6 in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 7-7 inFig. 1, and showing the trimming cutter in non-engaging position.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The frame of the machine which is of approximately rectangular form consists of side members 1, 1 which are connected and spaced apart adjacent to their lower ends by a cross piece forming a handle 2. The upper ends of the side members are curved rearwardly to produce overhanging brackets 3 which are connected by a cross bar a. Ad-
ditional cross pieces 5 and 6 serve to connect the side members and to space them apart at suitable intervals.
A rod 7 which detachably engages the side members of the frame serves to hold the roll 8 of wall paper, and a stop member or collar 9 having a set screw 10, whereby it may be adjusted, is mounted upon the rod 7 adjacent to the paper roll 8 for the purpose of keeping the latter steady in operation, said stop collar serving also to prevent the withdrawal of the rod 7 while the machine is in operation. The wall paper is guided over a roller 11 and under a paste box or receptacle 12, the bottom of which is provided with a slot 13 and with slides 1 1 whereby the slot or discharge opening may be regulated to correspond to the width of the paper that is to be applied. The paste receptacle 12 is suitably secured between the side members of the frame, and adjacent to said paste receptacle is mounted a yoke 15 having an eye 16 for the reception of a steadying member, such as a cord 17.
A cross bar 18 which connects the side members of the frame at a suitable distance from the lower end thereof carries a pivoted arm 19 at the outer end of which a circular cutting blade or disk 20 is supported for r0- tation. The arm 19 is provided with a notch 21 adapted to engage a cross bar 22 which limits the movement of the arm 19 when the latter is thrown in an outward or forward direction by the action of a spring 23, one end of which is attached to one of the side members of the frame, while the free end of said spring extends beneath the arm 19. The cutter 20 is adapted to engage any one of a plurality of annular grooves 24 in the guide roller 11, and it is adapted to be held in engagement with one of said grooves by a latch bar 25, one end of which is hingedly connected with one of the side members of the frame, while the other end of the latch bar may be connected with the opposite side member of the frame by means of a turn button 26.
The cross bar l over which the strip of paper is guided as it comes from beneath the paste receptacle is provided with a longitudinal groove 27 which accommodates the edge of a rotary knife or cutter 28 which is mounted in a slide 29 movable upon a cross bar 80 which is provided at the ends thereof with legs 31, 31 secured upon the side members of the frame and serving to elevate the cross bar 30 from said frame. One of the legs 31 carries a guide roller 32 over which is guided a flexible element such as a cord 33, one end of which is connected with the slide 29 and the other end of which is connected with one end of a tension spring 34, the opposite end of which is secured upon one of the side members of the frame. The slide 29 is provided with a pivoted yoke 35 having a handle 36 whereby the slide may be moved along the rod 30 against the tension of the spring 34, said slide being capable of being secured in a stationary position by depressing the yoke 35 to engage the supporting leg 31 of the rod 30.
Upon one of the side members of the frame adjacent to the leg 31 of the rod 30 is fulcrumed a spring actuated bell crank B, one arm of which, 38, is normally projected by the actuating spring 37 to lie beneath the handle of the yoke 35 when the latter engages the leg 31. The other arm 39 of the bell crank is connected by a flexible member, such as a cord 40, with one end of a slide 41 which is suitably guided upon one of the side pieces of the frame and which has at one end a handle 42 whereby it may be con veniently manipulated to actuate the bell crank. The latter, it will be noticed, con stitutes a trigger whereby the holding yoke 35 of the slide 29 may be released to permit said slide to be moved along the rod 30 by the action of the spring 34. When the slide is thus moved the rotary cutter 28 will travel along the groove 27 in the cross bar 4, thus severing a strip of paper which is guided over the cross bar.
A pressure roller 43 beneath which the paper strip is guided is supportedfor rotation between the bracket portions 3 and the side members 1 of the frame adjacent to the extreme upper end of the latter, said roller being mounted in such a manner that the face thereof will lie beyond the extreme ends of the side members of the frame, thus enabling the roller to be utilized for pressing and smoothing the wall paper upon the wall to which it is applied.
The device is provided with a suitable handle member 44 whereby it may be conveniently manipulated, said handle member being pivotally connected with the cross bar 5 of the frame.
A tension roller 45 is suitably supported for rotation by means of a resilient frame 46 which is suitably connected with the side members of the main frame of the device, said tension roller being adapted to bear against the wall paper roll, as shown. Another tension roller 47 is carried by a resilient frame 48, the side members of which are connected with the side members of the main frame, said pressure roller 47 being arranged to bear against the strip of wall paper passing beneath the slot or discharge aperture of the paste receptacle.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. The wall paper is guided from the roll 8 in the manner shown and described, over the trimming roller 11, under the paste receptacle, over the grooved cross bar 4 engaged by the cutting blade 28 and over the pressure roller 3. The trimming knife may be adjusted to trim the paper strip to any desired width, the trimmings being guided. over the trimming roller 11 toward the floor so as not to receive any paste. The pasted portion of the strip being guided over the pressure roller 43 is applied to the wall, and by manipulating the machine by means of the handle 44 and the steadying element 1?, the strip of paper may be readily applied to the wall from the bottom upward. iVhen the desired length has been applied, the cutter carryin slide 29, which has been previously secured by the yoke 35 engaging the leg 31 of the rod 30, is released by pulling the slide 41 to actuate the bell crank constituting the trigger, and the cutter carrying slide will now be carried along the rod 30 with the result of severing the strip, after which the parts may be restored to initial position for a repetition of the operation. In order to place a fresh roll of wall paper in position, the rod 7 may be withdrawn, the set screw 10 of the collar 9 having been previously loosened. By manipulating the turn button 26 the latch bar 25 may be released and swung back upon its hinge, thus permitting the trimming cutter to be thrown back under the tension of the spring 23 to a nonengaging position, and enabling said trimming device to be adjusted to a difierentposition when desired.
This improved paper hanging machine, as will be seen from the foregoing description, is simple in construction and easily manipulated, and by the use of this device wall paper may be hung rapidly, accurately and at a minimum expense for labor.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is .0
1. In a device of the character described, a frame, a roll carrying rod, a paste receptacle having a slot, regulating slides for the slot, an annularly grooved guide roller adjacent to the receptacle, a suitably supported revolving trimming knife engaging the grooved roller, and a tension roller resiliently supported adjacent to the slot of the paste receptacle.
2. In a device of the character described, a frame, a roller carrying rod, a slotted paste receptacle, a resiliently supported tension roller adjacent to the slot in the receptacle, an annularly grooved guide roller, a pivotally supported arm carrying a rotary trimming knife engaging the grooved roller, and
means for holding the cutter carrying arm in engagement with the grooved roller.
In a device of the character described, a frame, a roll carrying rod, a cross bar, an arm pivoted upon and slidably engaging the cross bar, a rotary cutter carried by the arm, a grooved guide roller engaged by the cut ter, a spring engaging the cutter carrying arm to move the latter to non-engaging posi tion, a cross bar hingedly connected with the frame and adapted to force the cutter carrying arm against the tension of the spring, and a turn button'engaging the hinged cross bar.

In a device of the character described, a frame, a roll carrying rod detachably engaging the frame, a slotted paste receptacle, means for guiding a strip of paper from the roll beneath the slot in the paste receptacle, cutting and trimming means, a cross bar upon the frame, a handle pivoted upon the cross bar, a yoke suitably connected with the frame and having an eye, and a steadying member connected With said eye.
5. In a device of the character described, a frame, a roll carrying rod detachably engaging the frame, a slotted paste receptacle supported in the frame, paper trimming and cutting means, a pressure roller, and resiliently supported tension rollers, one of said tension rollers bearing against the paper roll and the other tension roller being arranged to bear against that portion of the strip which is guided beneath the slot in the paste receptacle.

In a device of the character described, a frame, a roll carrying rod, means for guiding a strip of paper from the roll including a longitudinally grooved cross bar, a rod secured in proximity to the cross bar and having terminal legs engaging the side members of the frame, a slide movable upon the rod and having a rotary cutter engaging the grooved cross bar, a yoke connected With the slide and adapted to engage one of the supporting legs .of the rod, a guide roller supported for rotation upon the other supporting leg of the rod, a flexible element guided over said roller and having one end 7 connected With the slide, and a tension spring having one end secured upon the frame and the other end connected With the flexible element; and trigger means for disengaging the yoke of the slide from the leg of the rod to enable the slide to be carried along the rod under the tension of the spring.
