CHRISTIAN UNRUH, OF GLEN ULLIll', NORTH DAKOTA.
LEATHER-CUTTER.
To all whom it may concern Be 1t known thatl, CHRISTIAN UNRUH, a cltizen of the United States, residing atGlen Ullin, in the county of Morton, in the State of North Dakota, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in Leather-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in leather cutters and its object is to produce a device adapted particularly for cutting leather or similar material into strips of a predetermined Width.
The invention comprises a stationary roll that carries a knife adapted to cut'leather as the same is drawn by hand over said roll; and an adjustable guide movable longitudinally of said roll which may be set for strips of a desired width. j
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved leather cutter, with the table in section, taken on line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an end view of the device taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the roll and guide and is taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is an end view taken on line dl of Fig. 1, with the roll and knife turned half way around. Fig. 5 is a front view of an auxiliary roll section which may be connected to the main roll when a piece of leather of exceptional width is under operation. Fig. 6 is a cross section on line 66 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the roll and knife in the position shown in Fig. sand with an auxiliary guide secured to the shaft. Fig. 8 is a cross section taken on line 8-8 of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a front view of a modification of a portion of the guide. Fig. 10 is a plan view of Fig. 9.
Like reference characters indicate corre sponding parts throughout the several views.
My leather cutter comprises the base 1 which may be bolted as at 2 to a suitable table or support 3 and to said base 1 the standards 4, 4 are bolted that carry the shaft 5 on which the sectional roll 6, 6 is carried and between and to the sections of said roll the knife 7 is secured, said knife being Specification of Letters Patent.

formed with the diagonally opposite relaadjustable guide 14 is arranged and the same is provided with a transversely extending finger 15 held in position by a pin 15 and said finger is formed with a lug 16 against which one edge of the-leather strip, being cut, rides. The guide 14 is set upon the gage 10 adistance from the knife equal to the width of strip to be cut the leather piece is then manually drawn overthe roll against the knife, one edge of the leather riding against the lug l6 and the entire piece of leather extendingfrom said lug laterally beyond the knife. The operator stands back of the roll or in a position with the roll be tween himself and the table and pulls the ,leather over the roll against the knife. The
operation ust described is the one employed to cut the leather into strips of ordinary sizes.
To cut the leather into exceptionally large strips the roll 6, 6 is turned half way around or into the position illustrated in Figs. sand 7 thus moving the knife edge 9 into operativeposition and disposing the gage 10 and guide 1a in inoperative position or back of the cutting edge. A bracket 17 is placed between the nuts 13, 13 upon the shaft 5 to support the adjustable gage 18 provided with the sliding guide 19. The guide 19 is similiar in every way to the guide 14 and is provided with a finger 20 similar to finger sections 21, 21 and said sections are formed with lugs 22 in which the ends of a spring 23 are secured which spring tends to draw the free ends of the sections 21 together.
A lug 2% depends from one section 21 and against said lug one edge of the sheet of leather rides, this edge being inserted be tweenthe freegendsof said sections. The opening 25in the one section 21 is to receive the pm by Which it is secured to the guide 14:. WVhen'Wide strips of leather are standard 4; enters shaft 5 to normally prevent rotation of the roll 66.
' What is claimed is 1. In a leather cutter, a sectional roll, a knife carried thereby, a shaft journaled in suitable bearings and supporting said roll, a gage carried by said knife and shaft and extending longitudinally of said roll, a guide slidably carried by said gage and a leather-engaging finger carried by said guide. 7 2. In a leather cutter, a sectional roll, a knife carried thereby, a shaft journaled in suitable bearings and supporting said roll, a gage carried by said knife and shaft and extending longitudinally of said roll, a guide 'slidably carried by said gage and a sectional adjustable leather-engaging finger leather-engaging finger carried by said guide.
' 4. In a leather cutter, a sectional roll, a-
two-edged knife carried by said roll, a shaft supporting said roll and projected therebeyond and formed with asocket in one end, an auxiliary roll, rods terminally carried thereby for insertion in the sockets of the sectional roll'and shaft, a shaft supporting said auxiliary-roll, a gage adj ustably carried by the first namedi.s haft, a guide movable longitudinally of said, gage and an adjustable finger carriedfbl aid guide. 7
In testimony th claim-the foregoing as my oWn I have h reto a'fii'xed my signature in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses, I
CHRISTIAN UNRUH.
