MARION EEPP, OF OTSEGO, llLIIGIrTjIGJllI.
SLOT-GUARD FUR PAPER-TRIIVIIVIING- MACEINES.
Application filed January 3, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVIARION Rnrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at- (ltsego, in the county of Allegan and State of Michigan, have invented certain new'and useful. Improvements in Slot-Guards for Paper- Trimming Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in slot guards for paper trimming machines.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of this character by means of which the slot in the table of the machine in which closed or covered on both sides of the plate in whatever position the same is adjusted to on the table.
Another object is to provide a guard of this character which in covering the slot in the table will be flush with the upper edges of the slot, thereby providing a perfectly smooth upper surface for the table.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the table of a paper trim ming machine showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the table or paper supporting bed of a paper trimming machine. At the front edge of the table is arranged the stationary blade or knife 2. In the table is arranged the guide slot 3, in which the follower or stop plate l operates, said plate having secured to its lower edge a guide block 5, to the lower edge of which is secured a retaining plate 6, the edges of which engage the lower side of the table adjacent to each side of the slot thereby slidingly securing the follower or stop plate to the table. These parts may be of the usual or any suitable construction and do not form a part of my present invention.
Itevolubly mounted in suitable bearing brackets secured to the under side of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 27, 1910?.
Serial No. 535 $26.
table adjacent to the forward end of the slot 3 is a guide roller 7 while at the opposite end of the slot is revolubly mounted in suitable bearing brackets 8 a guide roller 9. Around the rollers 8 and 9 is passed a flexible slot closing strap or band 10 which is preferably formed of a strap of steel or other suitable metal. One end of the strap 10 is secured to the guide block 5 adjacent to the forward side of the follower plate, while the opposite end of the band is secured to the guide block adjacent to the opposite side of the follower plate, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
In the opposite sides of the slot 3 adjacent to the upper surface of the table are formed longitudinal grooves or rabbets 11, the depth of which is substantially the same as the thickness of the band, whereby when the latter is drawn over the slot by the movement of the follower plate 4, the upper side of the band will be flush with the upper edges of the grooves, thus providing a smooth unobstructed surface for the table.
By arranging the band 10 and securing the ends of the same to the opposite ends of the guide block, said band will cover the slot on both sides of the follower plate in whatever position the latter may be. By thus covering the slot in the table, the paper arranged thereon for trimming will be prevented from catching into the slot and obj ects will be prevented from falling through the slot and thus interfering with the operation of the machine.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the ap pended claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. In a paper trimming machine, a table having formed therein a guide slot, a follower or stop plate slidably mounted on said table and in said slot, and means to close the slot.
2. In a paper trimming machine, a table having formed therein a longitudinal guide slot, a follower or stop plate slidably mounted on said table and in said slot, a slot closing strap secured to and adapted to be operated by said stop plate, and means to support said strap in operative position.
3. In a paper trimming machine, a table having a guide slot therein, a follower slidably mounted on said table and in said slot, and means operable by said follower to keep said slot continuously closed during the back and forward movement of said follower.
4. In a paper trimming machine, a table having a longitudinal guide slot therein, a follower slidably mounted on said table and in said slot, a slot closing strap secured to and adapted to be operated by said follower for keeping said slot closed during the movement of said follower.
5. In a paper trimming machine, a table ed to support said strap in operative position in said slot.
6. In a paper trimming machine, a table having formed therein a guide slot, said slot having formed in its opposite sides adjacent to its upper edges guide grooves or rabbets, a follower plate slidably mounted in said slot, a slot closing strap secured at its opposite ends to said follower plate and having a sliding engagement with the grooves or rabbets in said slot, and revolubly mounted rollers arranged at the opposite ends of said slot and adapted to support said strap in an operative position, whereby the same is moved back and forth through the slot to close the same on opposite sides of said plate.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witmesses.
