To all whom'z't'may concern: 7 Be it knownthat I, Josnri-rWYnonsni, a citizen of the United States, residing" at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall-Paper-Hanging Machines; and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap'pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a machine particularly designed to facilitate the hanging of wall paper, and one by means of which a relatively great wall area may be covered with wall paper in a minimum length of time. V
More specifically, the object of this invention is to provide a wall paper hanging machine including a rotary reel for carrying a roll of wall paper, ndsuitable guide roll ers and plates for guiding the wall paper from the rollers beneath a brush structure, so that after a wall has been covered with paste, the machine may be employed for hanging the wall paper, by merelystart ing the wallpaper at the top of the room or one end of the wall to be covered, and drawingthe machinedownwardly along the wall during which movement the wall paper will be fed from the reel, and brushed by the brush for properly hanging or placing the same upon the wall. 7

' Referring more particularly to drawings-,.1 designates the handle of the machine, which is constructed of suitable side bars 4 and 5 are braced by suitable braces 6 and 7 ,so as to provide the necessary rigidity thereto.
The side bars 4 and 5- have enlargements S' and 9 formed thereuponf The center f th enlargement 8 isprovided with a bore 10, which receives one end of the shaft/11 of the wall paper carrying reel. The enlargemei'it 9 is provided with a slot 12 which extends inwardly from the outer edge thereof, to the center of the same-as clearly shownin Fig. 5 of the drawings, so as to permit of the insertion of the opposite ends of the shaft 10 of the reel which carries the wall paper therein. A latch lever 13 is pivotally connected as shown .at 14 to the s1de bars and it Is provided with a. pair of notches15 and 16. Thenotch 15 engages the shaft 10 andforms a bearing forthe game while the notch 16 engages a pin 17 carr ed by the bar 5; The engagement be numeral 18; is fed from the reel 18,"upwardly over a guiding roller 19', which is carried by the guides 4 andf) and it passes from the roller 19, between a pair of guide plates 20 and '21, over a third guide plate 22, and be: hind a brush structure 23 which'is carried at the upper ends of the side bars. The upper ends of the side bars 4 and 5 are braced by a suitable brace 2a to which the back of the brush 23 is attached. In using the improved wall paper hanging machine, the wall to be papered is first covered with paste, and then the end of the wall paper is attached to the upper edge of the wall or one edge of the ceiling, and the brush 23 presses the paper against the wall as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The machine is then moved downwardly, the brush 23 being held close against the wall at all times, for properly smoothing the wall paper and the downward movement of the machine will feed the wall paper from the reel 18, over the guide roller 19 between the guides 20 and 21 and over the guide sothat it will pass from the reel to the guide 22 beneath the brush 23 wherebv it will be properly moved and pressed against the wall.
A cutter structure is employed for cutting the paper, when the lower end of the wall is reached. This cutter structure, includes a knife which has its cutting edge 31 cut at an angle to the ends thereof, so as to provide a shearing cut to effectively cut the wall paper and prevent ragged edges. The knife blade 30 has its rear edge bent downwardly at right angles to the main body of the blade as shown at 32, and a pair of bars 33 and 39: are formed upon the ends of the downwardly bent portion. The bars 33 and 34 are connected to a bar 35 which extends across the frame of the wall paper hanging machine upon the opposite side from the side upon which the knife is positioned, as clearly shown in the drawings. The bar 35 has a substantially U-shaped yoke 36 formed therein to which the upper end of the arm 37 of a bell crank 38 is pivoted. The bell crank 38 is pivotally connected as shown at 39, to the upper end of the brace 7 which brace is twisted as shown at l0 to position the upper end thereof in proper relation'to the bell crank. A rod 4-1 is connected to the arm 42 of the bell crank and it extends downwardly along the handle, being guided by a suitable guide 42. The lower end of the rod 41 is curved to form a finger grip 4:3 for facilitating the moving of the rod to rock the bell crank 38 for moving the knife blade 30 between the lower edge of the guide 22 and the upper edges of the guides 20 and 21; A pair of rods 45 are carried by the guide 21 and they extend slidably through the downturned edge 32 of the knife blades 30. Springs 4L6 are coiled about the rods 45 and engage the outer surface of the guide 21 and the inner surface of the angle portion Gopies of this patent mav be obtained for 32 for returning the blade 30 to its normal position after the rod 41 has been released by the finger of the operator.
In reducing the invention to practice, certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of What is claimed.
WVhat is claimedisf 1. In a wall paper hanging machine, the combination of a handle, a supporting structure carried by said handle and including a pair of side bars, a reel rotatably and removably carried by said side bars and adapted to carry a roll of wall paper, an applying brush, a plurality of bar guides carried by said side bars for guiding the wallpaper from the roll behind said brush, certain of said side bars being spaced vertically, a knife carried by said side bars for movement between said spaced bar guides to sever the paper, a bell crank pivotally carried by said supporting structure, means for rocking said bell crank, and means connecting said bell crank to said knife for moving said knife into a cutting position upon the rocking of the bellcrank.

applying brush, a plurality of bar guides, carried by said side bars for guiding the wall paper from the roll behind said brush, certain of said guide bars being spaced vertically, a knife carried by said side bars for movement between said spaced bar guides to sever the paper, a bell crank pivotally carried by said supporting structure, means for rocking said bell crank, means connecting said bell crank to said knife for moving said knife into a cutting position upon the rocking of the bell crank, guide rods carried by said supporting structure and extending through said knife, and springs coiledabout said rods and engaging said knife for returning the knife to its normal position upon release of pressure of said bell crank rocking means. i
