My invention. relates-to;- wall-papering. devices. An important object. of invention is to provide a compact device, in which a roll of wall paper may be removably, and interchangeably,
mounted; containing suitable means. for applying the glue as the paper is unrolledi therefrom, for application to a wall or ceiling surface of, a room.
Another object of my invention is to provide optionally usable cutter means, for cutting off a portion of the width of the wallpaper, simultaneously-with, its'being unwound from the roll.
Another object of my invention is-to provide, in a device of the aforementioned character, means for 'cutting off transversally a sheet of wall paper to suitabl length, and" to which glue has beensimultaneouslyapplied: A- still further object of my invention is to provide simpler-0d support means for --supporting an optionally usable cutter, and novel means for quickly locking and-unlocking the said rod support in its place.
Astill further object of my invention is-toprovide glue distributing means; consisting of a notched roller, asubstantial portion o'f the said roller being submergedin the gluecontai-ner.
.A further object of .myninvention is to provide simple, and effective, lockingmeansafor the-spin- .dlesupportingzthe rcl'lzot wall papem.
A still further object of my invention-is togpro-s vide, a simple device of. the aforementioned character, which is practical-in construction officient in its use and operation, andof. such simple elemental structure-asto warrant economical manufacture thereof in quantityproduction.
Other features, and objects, of my. invention will becomeclearly exemplified from reference tothe accompanyingdrawing embracing the. various structural features of my invention, and bearing further .elucidationin the ensuing description, wherein likesymbolsare used to desig; lnate like-parts, andinwhich;
. Fig. 1 represents. .a perspective view of myi-nvention with certain portions thereof broken .away, so as to more clearly depict the structural details thereof.
Fig. 2 is a perspective, view indicating the removal of the upper guide. roller to. facilitate filling the glue pot, or well, with suitable gumor jpaste.
Fig. 3v is av perspective. view of invention showing the interchangeability feature, which permits of readily and. instantly mounting rolls of paper when necessary.

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective vieW, .Show,-
ing the. locking mechanism. for the guide roller,
which. also supports inartic'ulate, and radial. ad.-
iustment, the cutter which may be optionally used.
Fig. 6- isa fragmentary perspective view showing the-structural details; of the fractional or sectional wall-paper cutting. device.
Fig. '7 is. a. schematic view, showing, how the edge of the roll of paper is laced through the guiderollers, and the feed rollers of my invention, also.showing how. an edge thereof. is, utilized for cutting off lengths-of wall-paper.
Fig...8.is a perspective view, indicatin how my device may be used to apply a sheet. of wall,- paper to-a ceiling of a room..
Fig. 9 indicates how lengths of wall-paper are secured to a Wall surface of a room, and;
Fig. 10 indicates how a section of'the width of the wall-paper is being cut for application to a portion of a wall, next to the corner of a room, only a fractional part ofthe Wall-paper being essential, to form a continuous pattern.
Referring to the various views, my invention is, generally, designated H and itconsists of a base 38' of'wood, or otherlike material, on which may be mounted the body consisting of a U- shaped bracket formation, having a base portion t2, and upright sides l3 and M, in which the structural mechanism comprising my invention is removably and interchangeably mounted. The upright sides I3 and M at the rear are interconnected by the back portion23;
Referring to Figures 1 to 7, it will be noted, that I provide a roller or spindle 2|. for supporti'ng'a roll of paper 24', the upper edge 2Z5v thereof being laced over the roller 31 and under the guide rod 26, and over the guide rod 21:; then-it is laced under the upper guide roller, thatisbejtween the upper guide roller i9, and the glue distributor 31. The upper roller [:9 is urgedinto contactual relationship with the outer periphery of the glue distributor roller 3.? by means of the springs. 20-,each spring 20 having one of its ends anchored to the spindle l5 supportin the roller 3:l:,1the other end being anchored to the end. bearing support l8 of the roller 19. The said bearing, supports 18 operate inthe slots 11-, and are supported by the bottom portion thereof, the springs holding the said roller [9 in contactual frictional. relationship with the roller 3.1-. Thus theroller I 9; may be removedby moving theportions I8 out of the slot l1, and unhooking; the upper anchorage of the spring .20 whenever it is desired tovv feed the edge, of the paper 25, therethrough.
The wall-paper spindle 2|. is, provided witha headed portion 22, which, acts as a stop when the same is inserted in proper bearings in the sides l3 and I4, and a simple articulate locking means provided, which consists of one enlarged DDrti'on 29, mounted on. a pivot pin 28, and'having a handle.30, the same being actuated in rotative,
or arcuate direction, for covering the headed portion 22, or uncovering the same when it is either desired to hold the spindle in place, or when it is desired to remove it from assembly, preparatory to mounting a new roll of paper thereon..
The guide rod 21 also serves another purpose for mounting the cutter that may be optionally the rod 21 as indicated in Figure 1. It is to be noted, that the rod 2'! is provided with a hooked portion 31, which has contiguously thereto, a
knee or bent portion 32, terminating in a manipulating handle 33, so that the same may be brought into locking engagement with the side [4 in the support, or may be rotated out of engagement as shown by the dotted lines of Figure 5, which permits removal of the said rod whenever necessary.
The cutter, referring to Figure 6, consists of a holder body 4|, which is slidably mounted on the rod 2'], and a screw 42 with a soft tip is provided, for clamping the same in lateral adjusting relationship, as well as operative or inoperative position by rotating the same about the rod 21, bringing the point of the knife 44 into position for cutting, or into idle position when cutting is not desired. The body 4| is provided with an upward extension 43, on which the knife 44 may be spot welded, or secured in interchangeable arrangement, so that when the knife becomes dull the same may be removed, and replaced by a sharp knife, or it may be sharpened and replaced.
In Fig. 7, I indicate how the roll of paper is mounted in my device, preparatory to its actual use. It will be noted, that I provide a rear cutting edge portion which in no way interferes with the feeding of the paper as needed, and when proper length has been fed, the lower portion thereof may be bent as indicated at 53, and by a gentle pulling action against the cutting edge 40 the entire section or length of paper may be transversely cut at 39 and positioned on a wall.
The distributor roller 31 is provided with a series of longitudinal notches l6, which operate in the well 36, which contains the glue thus limiting the amount of glue that can be picked up by the peripheral surface of the roll 37. The said notches l6 thus provide sufiicient application of glue to the wallpaper, not allowing too much, nor too little, to be placed thereon, especially by virtue of the frictional and spring urged contactual relationship of the roller l9 with the peripheral surface of the roller 31, the roller having a tendency to squeeze or press out any excess glue that may be picked up by the paper,
thus furnishing ideal conditions for wall-papering.
The glue may be poured into the well 36, by using a pot 34 containing the material, and pouring the glue 35 thereinto as indicated in Figure 2, where the roller I9 has been removed, so as to facilitate that operation, and so as to prevent the upper roller l9 from becoming contaminated with adhesive.
When it is desired to cut a longitudinal section of paper as indicated in Figure 1, the cutter may be adjusted to the position shown by the dotted lines, thus causing the paper to be severed, simultaneously, with the pulling thereof through the device.
In Figure 8, I show, how my invention may be the ceiling line.
, length of wall-paper, it is out as indicated in holding the brush 45 which is customarily used by paper-hangers in their work, to make certain that the paper is adhering to the surface of the wall or ceiling to which it is applied.
In Figure 9, I show how my device may be conveniently placed on the floor, next to the base board 52 of a wall 49, and a length of wallused, and which is adjustable arcuately about paper is pulled up to align and be positioned at When it is desired to sever the Figure 7, and it is usually cut to a slightly longer length than'needed'to meet the top of the base board, so that the length of paper can be suitably attached to the wall, and the excess can be cut off with an ordinary knife, or other cutter so as to assure that the distance between the ceiling and the base board 52 has been covered.
After the wall 49 is covered with several lengths of paper, and an increment of space 41 between the edge of the last length of paper covered, and the corner of a room 50, the increment 4'! being less than the Width of the sheet, the cutter 44 is set into operation, so that simultaneously with the pulling of the reduced width section 46, the proper width of paper may be taken, which is also cut at a point to match the pattern indicated, the remaining sheet of paper may be saved for use elsewhere.
When it is desired to change a roll of paper, the locking device 29 is rotated to the dotted position of Figure 4 b manipulating the handle 30 thereof, thus exposing the headed portion 22, permitting removal of spindle 2| and insertion into the core of a roll of wall-paper 24, and then the locking device actuated to the full lines indicated at Figure 4. When it is desired to remove the cutter bar, in order to permit removal of the cutter, Figures 5 and 6 illustrate how that may be accomplished, namely, by loosening the set screw 42, then rotating the handle 33 to the dotted position, pulling the same out, thus permitting removal of the cutter from the free end of the axle 26.
The device is useful in covering walls, ceilings, and other similar surfaces of regularly shaped rooms, or irregularly shaped rooms.
Having thus disclosed and revealed my invention what I claim as novel and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the character described comprising, a frame-work, a paper roll supporting spindle removably mounted in the said framework, articulate looking means secured to the said frame-work and arranged to releasably lock the said supporting spindle, outer and inner guide rods forming a pair of wall-paper guide rods, spaced apart in substantially superimposed relationship mounted in the said frame-work above the said supporting spindle, a glue reservoir mounted in the said frame-work adjacent the said guide rods, glue distributing means rotatably mounted in the said glue reservoir, a mating feed roller removably mounted in the said frame-work and resiliently urged into contacting relationship with the said glue disused when held in one hand to apply a section of wall-paper to a ceiling 5|, the other hand 'cut off a fractional width of wall-paper when in its operative position and further adapted to be swung arcuately to inoperative position.
