Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Noun B. CHARTIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richland, in the county of Benton and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVall-Papering Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wall papering machines, and more particularly to an improved apparatus of the type described, 7
having for its primary object, the coating of wall paper with the usual adhesive and accurately applying the same to a wall.
Another object of the invention is to provide efficient means, whereby the paper may be moved over a plurality of guide rolls into partial engagement with an adhesive or paste, one side of the paper being efficiently coated with paste, and further, upon completion of the coating operation, providing means whereby the paper may be withdrawn from engagement with the tank and a suitable closure moved over the opening created by the withdrawal.
The invention also contemplates the provision of novel means for automatically severing the coated strip of paper from the supply roll, thus, facilitating the application thereof to the wall.
Another important characteristic of the invention resides in the provision of paper trimming mechanism, which will remove the usual blank margin of the paper in order that the same may be properly matched.
Other features of the invention, reside in an improved automatic device which will, when adjusted, cut the paper of suflicient width as to permit the machine to be used for finishing up and also, allow the same to efficiently hang the paper in corners; the provision of means whereby the paper may be held preparatory to its application to the wall, whereupon, the same is automatically released; and means for use in conjunction with the heretofore mentioned au tomatic severing mechanism, whereby it may be adjusted to cut the paper in various lengths, such as conditions or preference may dictate.
Finally, the invention aims to provide a novel apparatus of the character described, portable in character, easily manipulated, efficient in operation and strong and durable in use; one in which the parts thereof, are closely assembled and combined, thereby taking up a minimum amount of space, and
rendering the device especially applicable for operation in confined places.
All of the foregoing, together with additional advantageous details and arrange ment of parts of the preferred embodiment of my invention, will be clear from the specific description hereinafter contained, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, wherein the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated for the purpose of facilitating a full understanding of the present improvements.

Referring now more specifically to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views thereof, I provide a main casing or housing-'1 formed of sheet metal or the like and having arranged upon its bottom face, a plurality of brackets 2 and 3 which are adapted to rotatably support rollers 4 and 5. Sockets 6 and 7 are arranged upon the side walls of the casing and are adapted to receive the ends 8 and 9 of a handle attaching bail 10. The horizontal port-ion'of the bail 10 has arranged therein, an opening 11 whereby a washer 12, having its upper face serrated and a handleportion 13 having an enlarged flat head portion provided with a complementally serrated portion 14, may be secured thereto by means otlf a bolt which is passed through the opening and through suitably alined openings in the serrated washer and enlarged head portion, whereupon the wing nut 15 is turned into engagement with its threaded extremity, in order that the Vitl'lOUS adjacent elements may be securely clamped in an adjusted position.
The handle portion 13 carries a plurality of telescoping sections, generally numbered 16, the larger of which is pr aided with an interior y screw threaded portion 17, whereby a plug 18 having a threaded shank 19 may be received thereinto. To provide means whereby relative rotary movement of the various telescopic sections 16 will be prevented, 1 provide the adjacent portions thereof, with longitudinally extending grooves, which grooves are adapted to receive laterally distended lugs 2, while in order that the telescopic sections 16 may be held in their extended position, a spring latch is secured to one oi the adjacent portions of the telescopic sections as at 23 and is afforded lateral movement by means of an opening 2%. Thus, it will be obvious, that when the various sections are extended, the spring catch, due to its elasticity, will spring upwardly and consequently, abut the adjacent sections and accordingly prevent its telescoping. It will be also apparent, that should the operator desire to adjust the handle portion 13 in rarious positions with relation to the housing 1 or the machine, the wing nut 15 may be turned out of engagement with the bolt, whereupon the interlocking serrated portions may be adjusted.

A bracket or holder 27 having arm portions 28 and 28, the outer extremities of which are supplied with suit-able openings, is rotatably secured to the casing or housing 1 a point adjacent one side of the pocket 25, by means of journal bearings, generally indicated at 29. portion 01 the bracket member 27 is looped as at- 30 intermediate its ends, preferably at the middle thereof, and is received by a keeper 31 secured to the casing as at t will be noted, that the keeper 31 is provided with upon its under face, a dividing element 33. Arcuate springs 34- are also secured to the casing as at 35, ata point directly beneath the dividing element 33. By this arrangement the bracket 27 may be shifted from one position to another, as shown to advantage in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and may, by means of the said arcuate springs 34, be securely held in this adjust-ed position. A paper roll. 36 is received between the arms 28 and 28 of the bracket 2'7, the roll having been previously supplied with a core, not shown, which core is supplied with lugs 37, receivable in the openings arranged in the ex tremities of the said arms 28 and 28.
Arranged interiorly of the casing 1, is a paste tank 38, the same being secured to the side walls of the casing by means of apertured cars 39, which receive suitable fastening screws or the like 4-0. Attention is directed to the peculiar construction of the paste tank, the upper portion 01 which is substantially circular, while the lower portion thereof is reduced, the purpose of which shall be subsequently apparent. A door 4&1 having a transparent panel, is hingedly secured to the paste tank as at 12, adjacent a complemental opening formed therein and indicated at as. The door may be supplied with a catch as, which comprises the usual turning bolt or keeper, whereby the lower marginal edge of the opening 43 may be engaged. An elongated opening to is arranged in the reduced portion of the tank 38, preferably adjacent the lower extremity thereof and has arranged adjacent thereto, interiorly of the reduced portion of the tank 38, a plurality of rolls 4:6 and 16, which are suitably journaled in the side portions of the tank. The rotary paste applying brush 17 is also journaled interiorly of the tank adjacent to said rolls 16 and s6 and has arranged upon one end thereof, a gear 18 which gear is enmeshed with a. gear 49 j ournaled within the reduced portion of the tank and adjacent the opening 15. A slidable closure plate 50 is provided whereby the opening 4L5, may be, at times, closed, the said plate being supported and operated through the medium of a link 51 which is pi oted thereto as at 52, while its outer extremity is pivotally secured as at 53, to a lever 5%, which 181131 is, in turn, rotatably supported as at 55 to the side wall of the casing 1. The lever 5 1 is provided with a handle 56, the handle portion having arranged thereupon, a pivotally connected locking member 57, the lower portion of which is provided with a spring shoe, not shown, which may be engaged with the adjacent side wall of the casing and consequently, due to the friction as created by this engagement, will serve as enicient means for securing the handle portion 56 in an ad justed position. A paper supporting and guiding roll 58 is rotatably supported by a yoke member 59, as at 60 and has secured thereto, adjacentone end thereof, or both ends, it so desired, a gear 61, the gear being adapted to mesh with the gear e9 upon certain occasions. The yoke 59 has arranged thereupon, avertically.extending arm 62, the upper extremity of which is rounded as and normally engages with the under side of the enlarged portion of the paste tank 38. Pivotally connected to the vertical arm 62 at a point adjacent its lower extremity, as at 64:, is a connecting link 65, the link, in turn, being pivotally connected at its adjacent end, to an oscillating arm 66, the arm being pivotally mounted upon one side wall of the casing as at 67. A link 68 is pivotally connected to the upper extremity of the oscillatory arm 66 and has its remaining extremity similarly connected to the closure plate 50. It will be apparent, that the paper supporting and guiding roll 58, is, through the medium of its pivotally connected supporting means, normally held in a position so that a portion thereof extends through the opening 45 in the reduced portion of the paste tank 38 when the closure plate 50 has been moved from the opening, this being shown to advantage in Fig. 1.
' Referring now to the passage of the paper, through the machine, it may be stated, that the strip 36 is unwound from its supply roll 36 and passed through the opening as afforded by the extended portions 26 and 26 of the pocket 25, whereupon, it is threaded over an idler 69, suitably journaled within the side walls, of the casing 1 and then passes downwardly about a second idler 70, also rotatably supported by the side walls of the casing, from where, it passes forwardly about the supporting and guiding roll 58 and is brought backwardly and carried over the roll 5, finally, being brought upwardly and engaged with the roll 4:, where it is secured.
To provide for means whereby the paper -may be held in engagement with the roll 4 and released at certain times, a plurality of cam surfaces 70 are arranged upon one end portion thereof, and are adapted to engage a trip member 71 upon the lower extremity of a locking finger 72, the upper portion of the locking member having arranged thereupon, a laterally distended arm, not shown. The lower portion of the locking member 72 is reduced as at 73 and has arranged thereabout a coiled spring 74, the spring having one portion thereof, bearing upon a pin 75 arranged in the outer end of the reduced portion, while the remaining portion thereof is secured to one of the bracket members 2. A guide member 76 is secured to the bracket member 2 and has positioned thereupon, a vertically arranged slidable locking pin 77, which pin is normally held or forced inwardly by means of an expansible coil spring arranged thereabout. It is to be understood, that when the trip portion 71 is engaged by one of the cam surfaces 7 O the locking member 72 is forced upwardly, consequently, disengaging the laterally extended paper engaging arm and permitting the same to be released. A portion of the casing 1 and the bottom thereof is left open and in order to provide means whereby this opening may be normally closed, a cover 7 8 hingedly secured to the casing as at 79, is provided. An arm 80 is pivotally secured to one side of the closure as at 81 and has arranged thereupon, adjacent its outer extremity, a knife 82, a leaf spring 88 being normally engaged with the'under side of the arm 80 at a point adj acent the cutting knife and supported upon the cover by means of an angular bracket 84. A catch 85 is secured to the closure at a point adjacent its outermost extremity, as at 86, and has arranged thereupon, a notched extension 87 which is adapted to engage with a pin 88 supported by one side wall of the casing 1. A cutting block 89 i arranged adjacent the knife 82 and is provided with a groove 90 conform- A manually set knife engaging trigger 91 is pivotally secured to the casing at 92, the outer curved extremity thereof, being adapted to engage a portion of the arm 80, adja cent the said knife, while the remaining extremity extends upwardly into engagement with a pin 93 carried in a U-shaped operating arm 9%, the arm being slidably received in guide ways 95 provided for by the housing- 1. The operating member may be provided with a series of openings 96 which openings may be interiorly threaded for engagement with the pin 93, thus, permitting the same to be adjusted to any one thereof, at the option of the operator. An extended finger 97 is secured to the horizontal portion of the U-shaped operating member by means of a bolt '98. In order that the outward movement of the arm 80 may be limited, a stop 99 is positioned upon one of the side walls of the cover 78 in the paththereof.
In wall papering, it is also necessary that the paper be cut into varying widths in order that the same may be applied to corners or other places where the ordinary width of paper would be too great. In order to provide for means whereby the paper as rolled from its supply may be cut so'that various widths thereof'may be obtained, I provide a roller 100, journaled in suitable bearings in the side walls of the casing 1 and provided with a plurality of circumferentially extending grooves 101. The trans versely arranged shaft 102 having the ends thereof disposed within suitable depressed guide ways 103 is provided. Connected with the shaft is apivotally supported arm 10 1, which is guided throughout its travel by means of a quadrant 105, having arranged thereupon, a series of seats or the like .106, which seats are adapted to be engaged by a reciprocable locking pawl 107, carried upon the arm or lever 104C and actuated by means of a handle member 108. It will be evident that by this arrangement, the transverse shaft 102 may be adjusted toward and from the strip of wall paper 36, thus, permitting the cutting disk 109 as carried thereupon to be suitably engaged with the paper. Normally, the cutting disk 109 is arranged upon the shaft at a position adjacent its outermost extremity, shown to advantage in Fig. 4c, whereupon, the same will serve to remove the blank marginal edge 110 from the pattern paper. Should the operator desire to obtain a narrow strip of paper for the purposes as above outlined, the set screw 111 as arranged in the collar 112, which carries the cutting disk 109, is turned out of engagement with the transverse shaft 102 whereupon thesaid cutting disk may be adjusted laterally into the desired position, it of course being understood that the cutting edge thereof must aline with one of the various circumferential grooves 101. Accordingly, as the paper is drawn under the cutting disks, the desired amount will be severed from one ide thereof.
In filling the paste tank, the machine as a whole is inverted, the door 41 is swung into an open position whereupon, the paste may be forced thereinto, the casing being provided with an opening 113 for this purpose. When the filling operation has been completed, the door may be then closed and locked in its position and the machine again reversed whereupon the paste will be di rected into the reduced portion of the tank. It will be also apparent, that by the arrangement of the transparent panel in the door 41, the operator may readily ascertain the amount of paste as contained by the tank.
In reviewing the operation of the machine, and assuming that the paste tank 38 has been filled and that the paper roll 36 has been inserted and threaded about the various idlers and guide rolls until the rear extremity thereof is received within the pocket member 72, the machine is moved downwardly, causing the wall paper to be unwound from its supply roll and passed about the supporting and guide roll 58, during which movement, it will be engaged by the paste applying roll or brush 17. Upon further movement thereof, it will pass the lower guide roll 46 which will serve as efiicient means for spreading the paste evenly over the surface thereof, from whence it will be carried downwardly over the cutting block 89 and into engagement with the rolls 4 and 5. As the machine is moved downwardly, the laterally extended finger 97 is engaged with the base board of the wall, consequently,'forcing the U-shaped operating lever 94. upwardly, causing the pin 93 to be engaged with the outer extremity of the trigger 91, thus, disengaging the same from the cutting knife 82. This member is, due to its resilient mounting, then forced forwardly into engagement with the groove 90 as contained in the cutting block 89, whereby, the paper will be severed. Should the operator desire to discontinue his work, the handle 56 is forced upwardly, the catch or locking member 5? having been previously disengaged from the side wall of the casing, which movement will, bymeans of the various pivotally connected links, force the closure plates 50 downwardly, and, at the same time, force the supporting and guide roll 58 to be withdrawn from the opening 15 of the paste tank. Upon continued movement of the closure plate, the opening 45 will, accordingly, be closed and waste of the paste or adhesive will be prevented. Upon subse quent usage of the machine, the handle 56 is moved downwardly which will permit the closure plate 50 to be withdrawn from the opening 15 and also allow the supporting and guide roll 58 to be moved into engagement with the said opening. It will be evident, that as the roll 58 is engaged with the opening a5,'the gear 61 as carried thereby, will be engaged with the gear 19, which is journaled in the reduced portion of the paste tank 38 and in mesh with the gear 48 upon the paste applying brush. Due to the manner in which gear 61 is engaged with the said gear 19, a rotary motion will be imparted thereto, and accordingly, transmitted to the gear as, causing the rotation of the paste applying brush 417. By this operation, the flow of paste onto the exposed surface of the wall paper will be discarded and also will be evenly applied thereto.
Wall paper as usually marketed, is provided with a blank margin, as designated at 110 upon the drawings, and, in order to remove this blank margin, the bracket 27 is shifted laterally so that the pattern edge of the paper will be alined with the cutting disk 109. Due to the slidable mounting of the bracket, the roll 36 may be adjusted to either side of the machine, this depending upon the location of the blank marginal edge. When corners have been reached, or whenever the operator is desirous of using narrow strips of paper, the cutting disk 109 is accordingly adjusted laterally upon its transverse supporting bar 102, until the de' sired width has been reached, whereupon the same is secured in its adjusted position by means of the screw 11-1, this, serving as,
means whereby the superfluous portion of the paper may be severed therefrom.
Attention is also directed to the fact, that the strip severing mechanism may be readily adjusted so as to provide for strips of varying length, by the mere replacement of the pin 93. For instance, should the operating member 94 be extended, and the pin 93 insertedwithin the transverse opening 96, the
cutting mechanism will be accordingly actuated upon engagement of the extended finger 97 with the base board. t is also obvious, that the said extended finger 97 may be readily removed from the device and that the cutting mechanism may be actuated by the engagement of the operating member 9a with the floor of the room.
Should access to the various parts of the interiorly arranged apparatus be desired, the hingedly mounted .cover 78 may be readily swung downwardly by releasing the catch 85.
While I have herein disclosed the specific embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent to persons skilled in the art, that the invention is capable of embodiment in other forms and devices difiering in detail and arrangement from that shown as may be in keeeping with the hereto appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A wall papering machine, including a housing, means for supporting a roll of paper upon said housing, laterally ad ustable means for removing the marginal port on of said paper, paste applying meanscarried by said housing, means for applying the paper to the wall as it leaves sald paste applying means, and means for severing said paper from the roll, and ad ustable means for operating said last mentioned severing means.
2. A wall papering machine, including a housing, means for support ng a roll of paper upon said housing, vertical laterallyadjustable means for removing the marglnal portions of said paper, paste applying means carried by said housmg, means for applying the paper to the wall as 1t leaves said paste tank, means for sever1ng said paper from the roll, and ad ustable means slidably carried by said hous ng for operating said last mentioned severmgmeans.
3. A wall papering machlne, including a housing, laterally adjustable means for supporting a roll of paper upon sa1d housing, adjustable means for removing the marginal portion of said paper, paste applying means carried by said housing, means for applying the paper to the wall as it leaves said paste applying means, and automatic mean for severing said paper from the roll.
4:. A wall papering machine, including a housing, laterally adjustable means for supporting a roll of paper upon said housing, Vertical laterally adjustable cutting means for removing the marginal portion of said paper, paste applying means carried by said houslng, means for applying the paper to the wall as it leaves said vpasteapplyi'ng means, and automatic means for cutting the paper from the roll.
5. A wall papering machine, including'a housing, laterally adjustable means for supporting a roll of paper uponsaid housing, vertically and laterally adjustable cutting means for removing a marginal portion of said paper, a paste tank within said housing, means for guiding the paper from said roll through said paste tank,means forapplying paste to the paper passing through said tank, means for applying the paper to the wall as it leaves said paste tank, means for cutting and severing said paper from the roll, and adjustable means for operating said last mentioned severing means.

A wall papering machine, comprising a housing, adjustable means for supporting a roll of paper upon said housing, adjustable means for removing a marginal portion of said paper, a paste tank arranged within said housing, means for guiding the paper from the roll through said paste tank, means for applying paste to the paper passing through said tank, means for removing the paper from engagement with the paste tank, means for preventing-the waste of paste from said paste tank, means for ap plying the paper to the wall as it leaves said paste tank, and automatic means for severing said paper from the roll.
7. A wall papering machine, including a housing, laterally adjustable means for supporting a roll of paper upon said housing,
means for retaining said first mentioned means in a set position, a paste tank within said housing, means for guiding the paper in said roll through said paste tank, a rotary brush for applying paste to the paper passing through said tank, means for apply ing the paper to the wall as it leaves said paste tank, and means for automatically severing the paper from the roll.
8. A wall papering machine, including a housing, a laterally movable bracket positioned upon said housing for supporting a roll of paper, a paste tank within said housing, a keeper carried by said housing for retaining said bracket in an adjusted set position, means for guiding the paper from said roll through said paste tank, a rotary brush for applying the paste to the paper passing through said tank, and means for applying the paper to the wall as it leaves said paste tank.
9. A wall papering machine, including a housing, a laterally movable bracket positioned upon said housing, said bracket havranged within said housing,

10. A wall papering machine comprising a housing, means for supporting a roll of paper upon a housing, a paste tank armeans for guiding the paper from the roll through said paste tank, means for applying paste to the paper passing said tank, means for emoving the paper from engagement with the paste tank, means for preventing the waste of paste from said tank, and means for applying the paper to a wall.
11. A wall papering machine comprising a housing, means for supporting a roll of a paste tank arranged within said housing, said paste tank having an opening, means for guiding the paper from the roll through said tank, and including a guiding roller, a plate niovably I mounted upon said paste tank, means for simultaneously moving said plate over said opening and said guide roller away there- Copies of this patent may be obtained for upon said tank, links connecting said roller to said plate, whereby said roller may be retracted and said plate moved over said opening and means of applying the paper to a wall as it leaves said paste tank.
13. A wall papering machine, including a housing, laterally adjustable means for supporting a roll of paper upon said housing v a paste tank within said housing, means for guiding the paper from said roll through said paste tank, a rotary brush for applying the paste to the paper passing through said tank, means for applying the paper to the wall as it leaves said paste tank, and means for automatically severing the paper from the roll.
