NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID M. MCCANLESS, OF ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
PAPER-HANGING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,015, dated January 6, 1903.
Applicatienfiled September 23,1902. Serial No. 124,593. (No odel.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID M. MCCANLESS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asheville, in the county of Buncombe, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Hanging Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac companying drawings.
This invention relates to a paper-hanging machine, and particularly to a device for pasting, trimming, and applying to a surface a wall-paper.
The invention has for its object to provide a construction of machine adapted to be carried in both hands of the operator and embodying therein meansfor pasting the paper, trimming the edges thereof, applying the paper to the surface tobe covered, and finally severing the paper at the proper point for each length as used.
The invention has for a further object to provide a novel construction of cutting device for severing the paper, which device is normally held at one side of the paper by alatch and when released is automatically projected laterally of the paperto sever the same from the remaining pasted portion.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth, and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a central vertical section through the machine; Fig. 2, a plan thereof, and Fig. 3 a detail perspective of the cutting device.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the'several figures of the drawings.
The letter A designates the frame of the machine, which may be of any desired construction or configuration and preferably composed of the opposite side plates A, connected together by rods or tie-bolts, as usual, and provided at their lower portion with a handle A carried bya cross-bar A secured at its opposite ends to the side plates A, while at one end of the machinea depending hanger A is provided for supporting the casing B for the roll of paper. This casingis formed with a pivoted side wall B for the introduction of the roll of paper, and when closed an opening 13 is provided at the upper portion, so
.end with a handle G that the roll may freely unwind within the casing to secure a continuous feed of paper.
At the upper portion of the frame a bearing roller B is journaled inthe side plates, over which the web of paper passes downward to and around the paste-drum O. This drum is removably supported in the side plates by means of the pivoted latch or hook C,engaging the shaft or journal 0 of the drum, and
the latter is formed of any desired reticulated material Oihavinga clothing thereonfor instance,cheese-cloth or similar material-- which permits a free feeding of the paste to the lower surface of thedrum for application to the web of paper passing thereover.
above the upper edge of the frame, so as to press the pasted and trimmed paper into contact with the surface to which it is to be applied. This roll has its shaft E pivoted in the side plates A, similar to the other rolls.
Between the presser roll and the trimmer a cut-off device F is provided for severing the paper at the end of each length, and this device is slidably mounted upon a cross-bar F, preferably of rectangular form and provided with a knife F having a beveled edge F to produce ashearing cut in the lateral movement of the knife from right to left, and also with a lug F adapted to engage the free end G of a latch which is pivoted to one of the side plates at. G and provided at its lower The end of this latch is held in contact with the cutting device by means of a tension-spring G while the device is held under tension by an elastic cord F or other equivalent device extending from a fixed point F upon one plate A to a suitable attaching-point F provided upon the sliding cutter.
In the operation of the invention it will be seen that the paper is pasted and trimmed in its passage through the machine, and when applied to a surface by the presser-roller the draft on the paper continues to draw the same through the machine, thus automatically preparing the paper for application to the wall or ceiling immediately at the point and time of use. When the end of a length to be applied is reached, the latch may be tripped, permitting the cutting device to travel across the web of pasted paper, which is thereby severed between the trimmers and the presser-roller. It will be further seen that with a machine of this character much time and expense can be saved in the application of the paper and the waste thereof prevented, while the paste is applied to the paper immediately before its application to the surface to be covered, thus preventing the adhesion of the paste or pasted paper to the fioor or furniture of the room. It will be also noted that the trimmers and cutting device are applied to operate after the paper has been pasted, as it can at that time be more readily cut and severed.
It will be obvious that changes may be made in the details of construction and configuration without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined ,by the appended claims.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a paper-hanging machine, a pastedrum, a bearing-roller above said drum at one side thereof, a trimming-roll above the drum at the opposite side from the bearing-roller, a trimmer in contact with the trimming-roll, and a presser-roll at the opposite side of the trimmer from the paste-drum; substantially as specified.
2. In a paper-hanging machine, a pastingdrum, trimmers operating in contact with a trimming-roll, a presser-roll at the opposite side of said trimmer from the paste-drum, and a cutting device held under tension at one side of the machine and adapted to travel laterally across the same; substantially as speci fied.
3. In a paper-hanging machine, a pastingdrum, trimmers operating in contact with a trimming-roll, a presser-roll at the opposite side of said trimmer from the paste-drum, a cutting device held under tension at one side of the machine and adapted to travel laterally across the same, a pivoted latch adapted to engage and retain said cutting device at one side of the machine, and an elastic tension device for retracting said cutting device when released; substantially as specified.
4. In a paper-hanging machine, a frame, a casing supported at one end thereof to receive a roll of paper, a bearing-roller above said casing, a reticulated clothed paste-drum below said bearing-roller, an adjustable trimming knife and roller supported above said paste-drum at the opposite side from the bearing-roller, and an elastic covered presserroller; substantially as specified.
5. In a paper-hanging machine, a frame, a casing su pported at one end thereof to receive a roll of paper, a bearing-roller above said casing, a reticulated clothed paste-drum below said bearing-roller, an adjustable trimming knife and roller supported above said paste-drum, an elastic covered presser-roller, a cross-bar extending between the presser roller and trimmer, a sliding cutter upon said cross-bar, an elastic device for drawing said cutter to oneend of said bar, and a latch for retaining said cutting device under tension; substantially as specified.
6. In a paper-hanging machine, a frame,a casing supported at one end thereof to receive a roll of paper, a bearing-roller above said casing, a reticulated clothed paste-drum below said bearing-roller, an adjustable trimming knife and roller supported above said paste-drum, an elastic covered presser-roller, a cross-bar extending between the presserroller and trimmer, a sliding cutter upon said cross-bar, an elastic device for drawing said cutter to one end of said bar, a latch for retaining said cutting device under tension, at cross-bar upon which said trimming-knife is adjustably mounted, a clamp for securing said knife at its adjustment, a pivoted hook for removably securing said paste-drum in said frame, a cross-bar at the lower portion of the frame, and a handle provided upon said lower cross-oar; substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID M. MGOANLESS.
