UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT E. PATTISON, OF TERRE HAU'IE, INDIANA.
AUTOMATIC PAPER-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,860, dated March 23, 1880,
Application filed January 31, 1880. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT It. PATTISON, of Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Automatic Paper- Hangers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical section of my im proved paper-hanger. Fig. 2 is a side view of the paper-receptacle, and Figs. 3 and 4 are details.
This invention has relation to improvements in machines for applying paper to walls and it consists in certain novel combinations of devices whereby the paper is unrolled its margin cut off, and the remainder pasted and pressed on the wall, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings the letter A designates a preferably metallic frame having at its outer end a receptacle, B, into which the roll of paper is inserted. This receptacle has solid ends a, and at right angles thereto the flanges b, of curved form, on which the ends of the roll rest, the said heads being connected by the rods 0, that serve to retain the said roll and prevent it from unwinding, and by the curved plate 0'. Upon the rod 0, in front of the receptacle B, is arranged a laterally-ad- 3 5 justable metallic collar, d, and upon a similar rod, 0', is a rotating circular cutter, 01, open atin g in connection with the said collar to di vide the margin of the paper from its figured body. This cutter is held against lateral displacement and adjusted by means of the guide 0 laterally, and is composed of an annular body, 2', having a marginal cutting-blade, i, and a yielding ring, i, of rubber, closely e11- circling the part i and bearing against the perimeter of the collar d aforesaid. The guide 0 is forked at its lower end, and hangs down from a longitudinally-slotted plate, D, graduated for feet and fractions thereof. Its forked end straddles the cutter, as shown, and, when the guide is adjusted laterally, carries the cutter with it. This adjustment is had by means of a set-screw, 3, extending through the slot 5 .roller, D.
of the graduated plate, and through a perforation in the guide, and engaging a nut, 6, upon the under side of the said plate.
The rod 0', upon which is the cutter (1, extends through a vertically-movable block, f, arranged, after the manner of a sash, in the side bar of the frame A, and adjusted to cause the cutter to bear by means of a set-screw, s.
The roll of paper is placed wrong side out in the receptacle B, and its end passed between the roller 61 and cutter d, and under a guide- It is then carried over a pastingroller, G, arranged in a trough, G, on frame A, to and under the guide-roller H. The perimeters 0f the guide-rollers D and H are below that of the paste-roller G, and serve to hold the paper down upon it, so that its under side will be properly coated with the adhesive material.
J indicates a metallic frame pivoted to vibrate vertically to the end of frame A opposite to that carrying the receptacle B, and having in its end the pressing-roller B. This is usually of wood or metal, and is provided with a rubber sheathing or envelope, 9. From the guide-roller H the paper is passed under roller B, and stuck on the wall close up against the ceiling or cornice.
When the apparatus is used it is held horizontally, a handle, N, being attached to frame A for the purpose, and the end of the roller, being stuck to the wall, is lowered. The paper is fed as the device is lowered, and is pressed against the wall by the roller B.
It will be observed that the feeding, trimming, pasting, and fixing to the wall are performed mechanically by one machine, the latter operation being perfected by pressing forcibly with one hand against the cross-bar 0 of the frame J.
The supply of paste applied to the pastingroller is regulated by means of a scraper, S, attached to the trough and adjustable to or from the same.
The length of the receptacle B is regulated according to the length of the roll of paper by means of one of the flanged heads a, that is arranged to slide laterally upon the rods 0, connecting the side bars of the frame A.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a paper-hanging machine, the combination, with a receptacle for the paper roll, a pasting-roller, and a presser-roll, of a cutter applied between the receptacle and pastingroller, for severing the margin from the body of the paper before it passes to the pastingroller, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the frame A, having receptacle B at one end and a roller, H, at its opposite end, and the pasting-roller G, of the vibrating frame J, pivoted to the frame A, provided with a hand-rest bar, 0, and carrying the pressure-roller B, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the receptacle B,
having the slotted graduated plate D, the rod 15 0, having the rotary collar 61, laterally adjustable there0n,and the rod 0', having the rotary cutter d, of the guide 0, straddling the cutter and adjustably secured to said plate D, substantially as specified. 20
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
ROBERT RICHMOND PATTISON.
