'of the type known as pick-01f machines in which an adhesive a plying roll or its (equivalent is constan y supplied wlth ,a coating of adhesive and the sheets are coated with adhesive by contact with such roll from which they are stripped when coated by a socalled pick-off device.
Such machines comprise usually a gumming roll, feeding mechanism for feed1n sheets separately against the gummmg rol and a pick-off or stripper device for removing the sheets from the roll after the adhesive has been applied.
The invention has for an object primarily to provide an improved pick-oil device for such machines for stripping the coated sheets from the gumming roll but the arrangement provided is of such a character that it may be used advantageously with various other machines in which a similar function is to be accomplished. Such uses of the arrangement are contemplated as within the scope of the invention.
The problem presented is apparently simple but in fact particularly involved and diflicult.
Reliability and continuity of operation of the machines are essential. For example, under usual conditions of use, interruption of the output of a machine causes idleness of several operatives to whom gummed labels are supplied by the machine to be applied while wet to boxes and the like. Furthermore, the machines must operate effectively and reliably without frequent adjustment or repair by a skilled mechanic. This is essential because such machines are operated by unskilled labor and under suchconditions that it is impracticable to have them attended by skilled mechanics.
The pick-0E device, to be successful, must operate effectively, for example, to strip relatively thin paper labels from the gumming roll, and must do this continuously hour after hour without the necessity for stopping the machine andthus interrupting its use and permitti the adhesive to dry and harden thereon. Y and yielding andadhere with considerable tenacity to the surface of the rolls, especially when a particularly thin coatin of adhesive is being applied. The pick-o points bear upon t so thatburs form upon the points against whlch the sheets catch and tear or crumple, thus clogging the machine. To avoid this, provision must be made for repeatedly sharpening the points. Furthermore the pick-off points are usually arranged in a series across the machine and relatively close together, for example, four pick-offs for each inch of width of the machine. As the pick-offs wear and are sharpened, the points tend to get out of alinement with each other. As a result the wet labels are unevenly engaged and are torn or wrinkled, thus causing defective operation or clogging of the machine.
The present invention provides a pickoff device which is at once perfectly effective and reliable in use, easily sharpened and maintained in adjustment, and simple in construction. understood from the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof. The various features of the invention are in part explained in this specification and in part will be obvious to those skilled in the art.

In the drawing 1 have shown the gumming roll 5, feed rolls 6 for feeding labels 7 or other sheets against the gumming roll, and a conveyer belt 8 onto whichthe coated labels are delivered. These parts are substantiall the same as shownin my prior Patent 0. 1,279,311 granted September 17, 1918, and are shown merely diagrammatically herein for the purpose of illustrating the manner of use of the pick-off device. As shown, the gui e engages a shou der 13 on the holder and is secured in position by a screw. The pick-off point or blade is adjustably mounted in the holder as for example in a slot 15 and is held in ad'usted position by a clamping screw 16. he arm thus constitutes a holder on which are carried a fixed ide and an adjustable ick-ofi point or lade. The shape of the b ade is such that as it is shar ened and reset it is merely fed forward an the position of the upper sheet engaging and guiding edge 17 of the blade relative to the guide does not chan e. Proper cooperation of the guide and pic ofi' blade is thus assured.
The holder 9 is of suflicient weight to cause the pick-oil point to maintain contact with the umming roll during operation of the machine. The pick-off blade is formed to present a sharp int 18 in contact with the roll. Its lower ace 19 is arranged to be substantially tangent at the oint of the blade to the surface of the r01 5, such arrangement maintainin contact with the roll w ile at the same time providing a substantial bearin to resist wear. a It is contemplated that t e pick-off blade will be sharpened repeatedly as the the point in close int wears and before any substantial bur orms thereon.
The shape of the blade as shown is such that the point may be readily sharpened-by filin the lower face 19 thereof. The should pre erably be donein a ji which insures maintenance of the desire angle. It is necessary for best' operation that all the pick-ofl's on the particular machine be set with the same adjustment, both in order that the pick-off points may all be maintained in correct alinement with each other and also in order that the most efiicient angle betweenthe pickoff point and the surface of the roll may be maintained.
To insure such accurate setting of the pick-off blade in the holder, it is preferably always set both originally and after resharpening in a jig or gage provided for the purpose. Inasmuch as the exact predetermined position of the holder when the'gick-ofi point rests upon the roll is assure adjustable blade as above explained, the positlon of the guide relative to the gumming roll and therefore relative to the conveyer is assured.
