UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK W. MERRICK, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MACHINE FOR EDGE-FINISHING STRIPS OF MATERIAL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. M'ERRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machines for Edge Finishing Strips of Material, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompany- Eng drawings.
The invention consists in devices of novel and improved character'which are chiefly designed for use in applying a finishing, coloring, or coloring and finishing, solution or preparation to strips of material, ritually strips of thin and flexible material. n important use of the features of the invention is in the treatment'of stay-strips and the like. These strips are narrow, and usually are made of leather but in some cases are made of other material. The said features are applicable in the finishing of strips of" paper, and are not in all cases restricted to use in connection with narrow strips. They lend themselves, however, with especial advantage to use in machines adapted for the finishing of narrow strips. Devices embodying the said features are adapted to be employed to apply the solution or prepara-- tion to one or both of the edges of a strip, and if desired to one surface also of the strip.
A leading aim of the invention is to provide for applying solution or preparation to one or both edges of a strip but keep the face of the strip clean and entirely free from the solution or preparation.
.The invention, broadly stated, consists in the ,combination with a moving carrier, which may be a wallower-roll, or combined with one, and which preferably serves also as a feed-roll for the strip that is operated upon, of one or more scrapers or wipers by which solution or preparation coating the said carrier is displaced transversely toward the corresponding edge or edges of a traveling strip, to thereby treat the said edge or edges. '11: includes a primary, wiper by. which the coating may be removed from shall remain free fromthe solution or preparation.
It includes an improved doctor for securing uniformlty transversely in the Specification of Letters Patent.
thickness of the coating carried around .upon the surface of the carrier.
An illustrative embodiment of the features of the invention in a machine for treating a narrow stay-strip is shown in the drawings, in which latter,
, Fignre,1 is a side elevation of the said mathe scrapers or wipers are mounted adjust- 'ably."
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the doctor.
Fig.6 is an' end view thereof.
In the drawings, a' stay-strip a is represented as passing through the machine. 1 is a moving carrier," in this instance constituted by a wallower-roll, the lower portion of which dipsinto' a pan or container 2 that holds the solution or preparation 3 (Fig. 3) to be applied to the said strip. By the rotation of the wallower the coating of solution or preparation adhering to the surface thereof is carried around therewith. A doc tor 4 determines the thickness of the said coating, and thereby determines the amount of solution or preparation that is supplied for application to the strip. The latter goes through a strip-guide 5 having its deliveryend or nose located between the periphery of the carrier and that of a presser-roll 6, and close to the nip or point of closest approach of the said rolls. The strip in leaving the guide passes between the two rolls, it being held by the presser-roll against the periphery of the carrier. The carrier or wallower. is utilized as a feed-roll, it and the presser-roll constituting a pair of feed-rolls which grip the strip alongside the place of application of the solution or preparation to the strip, and serve to feed the strip through the devices and past the said place.
presser-roll is driven through power-connecplained later herein, and as it rotates it operates through engagement with the strip to feed the latter through the machine, the carrier or wallower being caused to turn as a result of the engagement of the strip with the surface of the carrier or wallower.
According to one portion of the inven- Patented Dec. 2, 1919. Application filed March 19, 1917. Serial no. 155,693.
tions that are combined therewith, as ex- In the machine shown in the drawings the p tion, if solution or preparation is to be applied to the strip-surface which makes contact with the wallower periphery, the corresponding portion of suchperiphery is permitted to remain charged or coated with solution or preparation until it transfers the same to the said strip-surface. If, however, s'uch strip-surface is to remain uncoated or uncolored, the said portion of the said periphery is wiped clean before the strip touches such portion. To enable either result to be attained in practice as desired, the illustrated machine is furnished with a wiper which may be brought into action or placed out of actionat will. This 7 Wiper is constituted by the underside of the nose of the strip-guide 5. The said underside is shaped to fit smoothly and snugly against the periphery of the wallower-roll, and in width corresponds properly with that of the strip. The guide is adjustable, as explained later herein, so as to enable the said underside thereof to be held out of contact with the periphery of the wallower, or in contact therewith, as desired. If the said underside is held out of contact with the periphery of the wallower the coating on such periphery will be left undisturbed and the strip-surface which comes in contact with the wallower will receive the said coating. If the underside of the guide is held in contact with the surface of the wallower, that portion of the periphery of the wallower with which it makes contact will have the coating wiped therefrom so that none will be applied to the said surface of the strip.
In accordance with another portion of the invention, for the purpose of applying the solution or preparation to one or both of the edges of the strip, the machine is furnished with siderscrapers or wipers 7 7 These are arranged to make contact with the periphery of the wallower-roll 1 at opposite sides of the point at which the presser-roll 6 makes contact with the strip a,'as well as in advance of such point, and their acting portions converge toward each other and the strip between them. The undersides of the said acting portions are curved to fit the curved periphery of the wallower. The transverse inclination or convergence of the side-scrapers or wipers toward each other operates to deflect inwardly toward. and against the edges of the strip those portions of coating which are carried by the portions of the wallower-periphery with which the side-scrapers or wipers make contact. The side-scrapers or wipers 7, 7 may touch the edges of the strip externally, but the best results are attained in practice when they do not actually make contact therewith but are separated by a narrow space therefrom. V
The said scrapers or wipers are mounted in manner providing for adjustment of the same widthwise of the strip toward and from each other, to suit diflerent widths of strip. A convenient means of mounting and adjusting them isshown in the drawings (see more particularly Fig. 4.) in which the stem-portion of each scraper or' wiper is attached by means of a screw 8 to a slidepiece 9, the two slides 9, 9, being fitted one on top of the other within a transverse groove 10 in the upper portion of a stand or bracket 11, and being fixed in place by means of a clampingv screw 12, the stem of which passes through longitudinal slots 13, 13, Figs. 2 and 4, in the said slides, and the threaded portion of the said stem being engaged in a threaded hole in the top of the stand or bracket 11. This mode of mounting the slides enables them to be adjusted transversely, as may be required in order to locate the scrapers or wipers at the proper distance apart.
stand 17. The opposite end of the swingframe is provided with a contact-screw 18 resting by its lower end upon a block 19, so that by the adjustment of the said screw the swing-frame may be adjusted vertically to thereby regulate the extent to which the lower portion of the wallower-roll dips into the pan or other container 2 and into -the solution 3 therein. A stripper 20 carried by the swing-frame, and having its acting end close to the periphery of the wallowerroll at the delivery-side of the nip between the two rolls, prevents the strip a from clinging to the wallower-roll and being carried around with the latter in its revolution. The. presser-roll 6, in this instance, is fixed upon a shaft 21mounted in a bearing 22 provided upon an arm 23. The said arm is furnished with an elongated hub-portion 2d that is mounted between center- screws 24, 24, in connection with uprights 25, 25, upon the swing-frame. This mode of mounting the said arm between centerscrews at a considerable distance apart prevents twisting of the arm transversely, and insures fiat contact of the per phery of the resser-roll with the strip a The pressure presser-roll 6 comprises a spur-pinion 27 fixed upon the shaft 21 of said roll, an idlegear 28 with which pinion 27 engages, mounted to turn upon the plain outer portion of one of the center-screws 24, and a spur-gear 29 with which idle-gear 28 also engages, fixed uponthe shaft 16, which shaft is rotated by suitable actuating means (not shown) in connection therewith.
The width of the presser-roll is less'than that of the strip a that is operated upon, in order that the solution or preparation that is deflected by the side-scrapers or wipers transversely toward and against the edges of the strip may not touch the presser-roll. This insures against any of the solution or preparation appearing on the face of the strip. If the solution or preparation should.
touch the presser-roll it would in consequence be caused to show on said face. To enable the machine to be adapted to operate upon different widths of strips, the presserroll is mounted detachably upon shaft 21 between a shoulder 21 of said shaft and a nut 21 which screws upon the she.
The strip-guide 5 is mounted in place by means of a pin 61, Fig. 3, projecting downward from the stem of the guide and enter ing a vertical socket in a block v62 carried by a yoke 63 that is hung upon reduced endportions of the hub 26 of swing-arm 23. A clamping-screw 621 passing through the said block engages with .pin 61 to prevent the guide and pin from rising relative to the block; The guide may be removed at will by loosening the screw 621 and lifting the guide so as to withdraw the pin 61 from the said socket. By means of.,a contracting spiral spring 64 having one end thereof engaged with an arm '65 projecting downward from the yoke 63 and the other end thereof engaged with a cross-rod 66 of the swing-frame 15, the uide is held down in working position. fieferring now to the means of adjusting the guide to secure the special results which have been mentioned: hen it is desired that the underside of the nose of the guide shall act "as a wiper, as
when solution or preparation is not to be applied to the under surface of the strip. the spring is pressed in yielding manner against the periphery of the wallower." When it is desired that the nose shall not act as a wiper, a stop-screw 651, Figs. 1 and 3, carried by the arm 65, is adjusted to engage with the adjacent upright 25 of the swing-frame 15 so as to limit the approach of the nose toward the wallower periphery and prevent it from touching the latter. Bymeverse adjustmentof screw 651 the nose may be per mitted to touch the. said periphery again.
The doctor 4 is carried by a rock-bar 51 which is mounted'pivotally upon a cross-pin 52 carried by the uprights 25, 25, of the having one end engaged with arm 51 and It is difiicult to secure uniformity in the in the drawings, forming a feature of the permitted to keep the nose,
swing-frame 15. It occupies an inclined position, with its elevated acting end resting upon the upper portion of the periphery of the walloWer-roll in advance of the guide 5. An adjusting-screw 53 working through a threaded hole tapped in the forwardly-proj'ecting arm 54 of saiddoctor engages-by its lower end with cross-rod 66 of the swingframe. A contracting spiral spring the other with a cross-pin 56 carried by swing-frame 15, acts in opposition to the adjusting-screw 53, with a tendency to-move the acting portion of the doctor away from the peri hery of the wallower. By means of the a justing screw the acting end of the doctor may be caused to bear with the required pressure against the wallowerperiphery.
coating, transversely of the wallower-roll, when an ordinary doctor is employed.- I secure the desired uniformity by'means of the special construction of doctor that is shown '90 invention. In the case of such construction, a main acting portion extends across the face of the wallower-roll and is adapted to act in usualmanner in conjunctiontherewith.- Ears 57 57, projecting from the'said main portion at the sides of the wallowerroll, remove from said sides the portions of solution or preparation finding their way thereto. "A supplemental actingportion, 58, is located beneath the main acting portion. The said supplemental acting portion has its engaging end located in a recess in the under side of the main acting portion at one side of the middle ofthe width of the said main portion, as shown in Fig. 6, and is about one-half the width of the main portion. It is constituted by a strip of spring material that is connected by one end thereof 1 with the main portion beyond the cross-pin 52. Anadjusting-screw. 59 applied to the. 110 main portion of the-doctor engages by its end with the'said strip. By adjustment of the said screw, the engaging end of the supplemental acting portion may be caused to bear more or less effectually for wiping 1-15 purposes so as to secure the desired uniformity of wiping action across the face of the wallower-roll. 1 i
