(c1-.-91 49) This invention relates to apparatus for applying gum to a web of paper, which latter, if desired, may also comprise a series of overlapping blanks.
5 Apparatus, more particularly for the application of dry gum, having a gumming roller, past which there is moved the web of paper to be gummed, which may consist of separate blanks arranged to overlap one another in fish-scale 0 fashion, are old in themselves. 1
In the known gumming apparatus of this character the provision of a thin and even layer of the adhesive on the gumming roller, and according-1y the application of strips of gum of uniform thickness to the web of paper being treated, is confronted by difliculties due primarily to the fact that it is impossible to provide a suitable scraper for the adhesive at the correct point.
It is the object of the invention to overcome this drawback, and in the accomplishment of this object the invention accordingly consists of an apparatus for applying gum to a web of paper, or a series of separate overlapping blanks, which comprises a gumming roller, means for moving the web of paper or the overlapping blanks past the gumming roller, and a stationary hollow cylinder filled with gum and. arranged adjacent the application or coating roller, the said hollow cylinder having at least one outlet slot opening out into a sickle-shaped recess in the outer face of the cylinder and being made to bear with this recess in such amanner against the gumming roller that the peripheral face of the gumming roller moves past the said outlet slot in close proximity thereto'and is thus supplied withgum from the hollow cylinder.
In accordance with an additional feature of the invention he hollow cylinder is so disposed in relation to the gumming roller that the latter,

. is situated to a slight extent away from the cylinder at the upper edge of the sickle-shaped recess, whilst it bears closely against the cylinder below the outlet, slot, so that between the hollow cylinder and the gumming roller there is formed a v nozzle-like gap tapering in the direction towards the slot.
In its movement past the outlet slot in the hollow cylinder the gumming roller, in a manner of the upper edge of the. sickle-shaped recess in the hollow cylinder and is retained on the outer face this position having the advantage that the'application of the gum to the paper can be observed particularly well. I
The apparatus as set forth also has the advantage that the adhesive accommodated within the hollow cylinder is protected almost completely against the access of air, so that it is unable to coagulate, at least to any appreciable extent.

In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1 there is rotatably mounted between the two side walls I, I of a frame the gumming roller 3, which during the coating operation is driven continuously in the direction of the arrow 2. A web of paper is moved in any suitable fashion past the roller 3 in the direction of the arrow 4, for, example by means of conveying belts. In the particular -example shown this web 5 is made up of separate overlapping envelope blanks 6.
In its movement past the gumming roller 3 the web 5 is preferably pressed against the roller by a presser roller T. To the side of the gumming .roller 3 there is provided a hollow cylinder 8,
which is stationary during the coating operation and can be filled with adhesive through an up per opening 9, in which connectiomfor the pu.-- pose of efiectingcontinuous refilling, there can be provided on the hollow cylinder 8 a filling vessel ID. The two ends II, II engaging in stopperlike fashion in the cylindrical body 8 are mounted on the studs l2, [3 of bolts l4,'l5.' The latter are rotatably mounted in clamping jaws. I8,

v By means of the clamping screws 28 the bolts I4, I5, and accordingly the hollow cylinder 8. can be adjusted transversely and clamped down in position. Threaded bolts 2| engaging in longitudinal slots in the members I8, I 8 serve to secure the hollow cylinder 8 in relation to the roller 3. The threaded bolt I5 is pressed continuously against the hollow cylinder 8 by means of a spring l6. For the purpose of replacing the hollow cylinder 8 it is merely necessary to withdraw the bolt I5 by means of the knob whereby the stud I3 is disengaged from the end portion H and the cylinder 8 can be removed from the apparatus. For the purpose of fine adjustment of the anengages at its lower end between a roll 23 and an adjustment screw 24, which is passed through a bar 25 extending between the side walls The roll 23 is rotatably' mounted on a lever 29 which in turn is pivotally supported at 26 by an angle member 21, which is secured to the bar 25. A spring 28 presses the roll 23 continuously against the arm 22, and accordingly the arm 22 against the .adjustment screw 24. The supporting lever 29 for the roll 23 possesses a handle 30 extending beyond the axis 26, by means of which handle the roller 23 can be rocked temporarily away from the arm 22 when the cylinder 8 is being fitted in position.
An essential feature resides in the provision in the peripheral face of the cylinder 8 of a sickleshaped recess 35, which is adapted to'the periphery of the gumming roller 3 and'into which there opens out the outlet slot 32 for conveyin gum out of the cylinder 8. The angular position of the cylinder 8 is so adjusted by the means described that this cylinder assumes in relation to the gumming roller 3 approximately the position shown in Fig. 2, in which at the upper edge 3| of the recess 35 the gumming roller 3 is situated a slight distance away from the cylinder 8, whilst below the outlet slot 32 it bears closely against the hollow cylinde'r. There is accordingly formed between the hollow cylinder-8 and the gumming roller 3 a nozzle-like gapof greater or smaller width at the upper end dependent on the angu-' arrow 33 and then transfers the sametothe web inder 8 above the edge 3|. The roller 3 in contacting with the paper accordingly possesses continuously a thin layer of adhesive of uniform thickness and not contaminated with impurities of any kind.
The embodiment illustrated in Fig. 5 differs from that described merely by the fact that the and also the operation of the apparatus according to Fig. 5 are the same train the first embodiment described.
What I claim as .new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In apparatus for applying gum to a web of paper or to a series of separate overlapping blanks, the combination of acylindrical gumming roller, means for moving an article to be coated past said roller, a stationary gum'receptacle provided with a crescent shaped elongated recess at its outer face adjacent to the periphery of said roller, a conduit for conducting gum from the interior of said receptacleto said recess, said recess and said roller being adjustable relative to each other to provide a variable distance therebetween to thereby regulate the amount of gum which adheres to the surface of said roller as it passes out of said recess.
2. In an apparatus for applying gum to a web of paper or a series of separate overlapping blanks, a gumming roller, means for moving the gumming roller, a stationary hollow cylinder arranged adjacent the said gumming roller and having'a peripheral sickle-shaped recess adapted to co-operate with the said gumming roller for applying a thin layer of gum to the said gumming roller, the said hollow cylinder having at least one outlet slot opening out into the sickleshaped recess for the purposiof transferring gum from the interior oi. the said hollowcylin" der to the saidrecess and thence to the said web of paper or the overlapping blanks past the sired angular position of the said hollow cylinder in relation to the said gumming roller.
3. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2, in
which the said means for adjusting the angular position of the hollow cylinder comprise an adjustment screw and a resilient counter-stop and at least one arm secured to the'hollow cylinder and engaging at its opposite end between the said adjustment screw and the said counters QD, the said adjustment screw permitting of line adjustment of the said arm.
4. In apparatus for applying gum to a web of paper or to a series of overlapping blanks, the combination of a stationary gum receptacle provided with a crescent shaped longitudinal recess at its outer face, a. conduit for conducting gum from the interior of said receptacle 'to said recess, a cylindrical gumming roller positioned to extend into said recessto provide a space between.
the wall of said recess and said roller whose width perpendicular to the periphery of said roller decreases in the diredtion'of rotation of the latter, adjustable mounting means for said receptacle afl'ording adjustment of the latter relativ to said roller for regulating the width of said space to thereby vary the amount of gum adhering to the surface of said roller as it leaves cess. 1 said lie KURT KAUFMANN.
