1. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION.
Devices hitherto known of the kind in consideration, and in particular the type using a rotating cylinder for transfer of the glue strand over glue transfer surfaces formed on the cylinder, cannot be used in connection with rapid packing machines, since it proved to be almost impossible without complicated and nevertheless not entirely reliable means to synchronize the speed of rotation of the cylinder with the speed of advance of the web of material and in particular since the cylinder must be imparted so high a rotational speed that the glue is slung away from the cylinder by centrifugal forces.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION One main object of the invention is to provide a glue transferring device in connection with which the risk of glue splashes from the glue transfer member due to centrifugal forces is completely eliminated and with which the taking up and the transfer of glue is effected in a substantially straight movement within a very short period of time.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION According to one main feature of the invention the rotatable body is connected to a planetary wheel on a planetary gear carrier coupled to driving means adapted to impart to the planetary gear carrier a rotative movement said planetary wheel being in engagement with inner teeth on a fixed ring gear, the gear ratio between said planetary wheel and said ring gear being selected so as to cause the glue-transferring member during the rotational movement of the rotatable body to be directed towards, alternately, the glue taking up station for taking up glue, and the web of material for delivery of the taken up glue.
By utilizing according to the invention a planetary gear, the influence of centrifugal forces is eliminated and, in addition, the glue-transferring surface is not only imparted a movement parallel to the web of material, but also a component of motion directed alternately towards, and away from, said web, due to which features the contact between the web and the gIue-transfem'ng surface is limited, as far as time is concerned, so much that perfect synchronization is not decisive for obtaining a well-defmed glue strand.

DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION ing in a predetermined position by means of clamping screws 6, 8. Mounted on the topside of the flat bar iron 5 is a L- shapedadjusting plate9 by means of screws 10, 11 provided with spring washers and penetrating through oval holes in the plate 9 and screwed down into the flat bar iron 5. The surface of the plate 9 facing the rear wall of the flat bar iron 5 can be advanced towards or retracted from the rear wall of said flat bar iron by means of adjusting screws 12, 13 whereby the plate can be displaced transversely to the symmetry axis of the flat bar iron 5 coinciding with the axles 2 and 7. The plate 9 is formed with two rear rigid tongues 14, 15, and a frontal resilient tongue 16, between which tongues a glue receiver 17 is clamped detachably. The glue receiver consists of a sheet plate of suitably resilient material with a strip fixed by clamping against the top face of the flat bar iron 9 and between the tongues 14, 15, 16 and formed with downwards projecting resilient fingers 18 carrying a strip-shaped glue-adsorbing sheet plate 19. As will be seen best from FIG. 2 there is disposed a glue vat 20 extending below the entire longitudinal dimension of the glue adsorbing sheet plate 19, which vat is supplied with glue in a manner not shown here in detail through an opening 21 so that a substantially constant, predetermined glue level is maintained in the vat 20.
The axle 7 is at its outer end provided with a cam follower 22 cooperating with a cam 23 which is fixed on a hub 24 by means of a screw 25. The hub 24 is adjustable in arbitrary tor sional positions on a shaft 26. The shaft 26 is mounted in a ball bearing 27 positioned in a bore in a hub 28 formed on a casing 29 having a cylindrical space coaxial with the shaft 26. The shaft 26 carries at its inner end a fixedly mounted disc 30 which carries a shaft 31 fixedly mounted in said disc in eccentric relation thereto. At its opposite end said shaft 31 is rigidly connected with a planetary gear carrier 32 which is mounted on a shaft 33 which is coaxial to the shaft 26 and rotatably mounted in a ball bearing 34 which in turn is fitted by pressing within a hub 35 of a ring gear 36 formed with an interior gear rim 37. The hub 35 is attached in a stationary manner in the end wall 4 of the frame 1 by means which are not shown here in detail, but may be a wedge or a set screw. The hub 28 may be fixedly attached in a similar manner. The planetary gear carrier 32 located within the cylindrical interior space of the ring gear 36 has a planetary wheel 38 which. by means of a flange 39 is rigidly secured onto a tube 40 surrounding the shaft 31. The end of the tube 40 facing the disc 30 has a sleeve 41 pressed thereon and carrying a ball bearing 42 mounted on the shaft 31. The planetary wheel 38 carries a ball bearing 43 seated on the shaft 39. Thus the sleeve 41, the tube 40 and the planetary wheel 38 with its flange 39 rotate as a unit freely in relationship to the shaft 31. The teeth 44 of the planetary wheel 38 are in engagement with the gear rim 37 of the stationary ring gear 36. For actuation of the planetary gear consisting of the ring gear 36, the planetary gear carrier 32 and the planetary wheel 38 a sprocket 45 or similar means driven by the main shaft not shown here of the machine, is mounted on the outer end portion of the shaft 33 rigidly connected with the planetary gear carrier 32.
As will be seen best in FIGS. 1 and 2, the disc 30 and the planetary gear carrier 32 are united together by reinforcing bars 46, 47.
The tube 40 is formed with a longitudinal, radially directed groove 50 within which a glue depositing member is secured by clamping. In the embodiment shown the glue depositing member consists of a metal bar or strip 51 fitted into the groove 50, a toothed glue applying member 52 made of metal or plastic, most suitably Teflon," being in turn fixed by clamping in said bar.
Detachably arranged on the frame 1 is a paper guide 53 over which a web of paper 54 (FIG. 2) to be supplied with a row of glue spots by means of the toothed glue applying member 52. The paper guide 53 is preferably disposed so as to cause the teeth 55 of the glue-applying member to be located at some distance from the paper web, e.g., with a spacing of some tenths of a millimeter so that the glue will be transferred only by the glue surface on the teeth being brought to contact the paper web. Of course, if a continuous glue line is desired on the paper web or the web of thin sheet material, the edge of the glue-applying member is made uninterrupted. Suitably, the paper guide 53 is provided with slide edgings 56 extending in the direction of advance of the web of material and located with such a spacing from one another as to maintain the web 54 fed past the glue-applying member 52 stretched in accordance with the common contour line for the outer edge of the toothed glue-applying member 52. In the illustrated embodiment a steering member 57 cooperating with the paper guide 53 and having slide edgings 58 opposite to the one and the other, respectively, of the slide edging 56. As is indicated in fig. 2, the web of material 54 is conducted between the paper guide 53 and the steering member 57 which last mentioned in the shown embodiment is provided with a lower stop member 62 against which the lower edge of the web 54 rests during the glue application operation. The means for withdrawal of the web portion provided with glue and severing the same are not shown more in detail. Even if the shown embodiment presupposes intermittent advance of the web of material, the web nevertheless may be arranged for continuous advance.
As is diagrammatically shown in FIG. 4, the cam follower arm 22 is kept in abutment against the cam 23 by a tension spring 59 interposed between the arm 22 and the frame end wall 3. The position of the glue-adsorbing sheet plate relative the glue vat 20 will thus be determined by the cam 23. The lowermost point 62 (FIG. 5) on the cam 23 corresponds to that position of the glue-adsorbing plate 19 where the plate is entirely immersed into the glue within the vat 20, and the point 61 to that position where the plate 19 is withdrawn from the vat 20 and on its surface is covered by a glue layer having a thickness of some tenths of a millimeter and which is transferred to the glue applying member 52 when this latter is located straight opposite the plate 19. Most suitably there is an interspace between the edge or the teeth 55 of the plate 52 and the surface of the plate 19, so that mechanical contact between them is avoided.

As is best evident from FIG. 2, the glue adsorbing plate 19 which in the illustrated embodiment constitutes the glue-taking up station of the device is located diametrically opposite the glue transfer station shown also in FIG. 2. The tube 40 must thus be turned about half a revolution together with the planetary gear carrier 32 to displace the glue applying member 52 from the position where it receive glue from the glue adsorbing plate 19, to the position shown in FIG. 2, in which position glue just has been transferred onto the web of material 54. As mentioned earlier the planetary gear carrier 32 is driven from the sprocket 45 and suitably, although not necessarily, counterclockwise in FIG. 2 and thus will transfer glue to the web of material 54 during the short period that contact is established between the glue layer on the teeth 55 in consideration and the web of material. The sprocket 45 is driven synchronously with the driving mechanism not shown for the web of material 54 which will result in that strands of glue are applied onto the web with exactly defined spacings. As in the embodiment shown, the tube 40 must be rotated for half a revolution between the picking up of glue and the transfer and deposition of the picked up glue, the gear rim 37 of the ring gear 36 must have twice as many teeth as the planetary wheel 38. Of course, the tube can also be caused to rotate with an uneven number of multiples of halves of a revolution to cause the shown positions to be reached, but as centrifugal forces actuating the glue layer on the glue applying member 52 ought to be avoided, the lowest possible revolution, i.e., in the present case half a revolution, is preferably selected.
When the planetary gear carrier 32 is rotated, the tube 40 is turned in clockwise direction (seen in the plane of FIG. 2) about the shaft 33. As the tube 40 is connected to the planetary wheel 38 it will, however, at the same time be rotated in counterclockwise direction (FIG. 2). The motion produced by these two rotative movements actuating the glue applying member 52 results in that said member will move substantially transversely towards and away from, respectively the web of material 54, whereby the applied glue strand will be highly well defined. The same holds true when the glue applying member during the rotative movement is fed substantially transversely towards the plate 19 and by the continued rotation is caused immediately to leave said plate. As already mentioned, there is preferably established an interspace corresponding to the thickness of the glue layer on the plate 19 between the glue-picking up edge of the member 52 and the plate 19 for which reason glue picked up by the plate 19 will be sucked over to the edge of the member 52 Le, in the illustrated embodiment the front ends of the teeth.
In the position shown in FIG. 2 of the glue-applying member 52 the cam follower arm 22 bears against the lowermost surface 60 of the cam 23 or adjacent said surface, and, as a consequence, the bar 5 has been turned in counterclockwise direction, according to FIG. 2, so much that the glue-adsorbing plate 19 takes its lowermost or almost lowermost immersed position in the glue vat 20. When the cam 23 thereafter is rotated due to the movement of the planetary gear carrier 32 and that of the disc 30 connected therewith by the rods 46, 47, the cam follower arm 22 will slide upwards towards the topmost surface 61 of the cam 23 and turn the bar 5 in counterclockwise direction according to FIG. 5, causing the plate 19 the surface of which has been covered with a thin layer of glue to cooperate with the edges of the teeth 55 so that these edges are provided with an exactly determined glue layer which is transferred to the web of material 54 at exactly the predetermined place. The movement of the member 52 relative the plate 19 in the moment of glue transfer is a substantially straight reciprocative movement with a very short contact time between the edges on the teeth 55 and the glue layer on the sheet 19 and no sliding movement whatsoever will thus occur.
The glue-transferring device described renders possible a transfer of glue between points arbitrarily selected relatively one another, and the risk of too great centrifugal forces which could cause glue to be slung off from the member 52 has been eliminated completely, while at the same time the picking up and delivery of glue is effected very rapidly and without any sliding motion between, respectively, the web of material and the glue applying member, and the glue picking up member and the glue-applying member.
MODIFICATIONS OF THE ILLUSTRATED EMBODIMENT The shown embodiment can be modified in various manners. If, for example, the position for the picking up of glue is desired to be displaced by in relation to the position for transfer of the glue, a gear ratio between the ring gear and the planetary wheel amounting to 4:1 is to be selected. Of course, the plate 19 need not be supported by resilient fingers 18, but may e.g., be fixedly mounted on a carrier of arbitrary shape secured to the bar 5. Furthermore, it is possible to replace the bar 5 and the means cooperating therewith by a rotating cylinder the lower portion of which is positioned immersed in the glue vat, the glue-applying member 52 moving towards the upper surface portion thereof for taking up glue from the glue layer formed on said upper surface portion.
While one more or less specific embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is to be understood that this is for purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited thereby, but its scope is to be determined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A glue-transferring device for rapid transfer onto a web of material (54) moving in one direction during a work cycle of a strand of glue transversely to the direction of movement of said web, said device including at least one glue adsorbing surface (55) adapted to be moved between a glue-taking up station and a glue transfer station and formed on a glue-transferring member (52) mounted on a rotatable body (40), said glue-adsorbing surface (55) having a length, calculated in the axial direction of said rotatable body (40), corresponding to the length of the strand of glue, characterized in that said rotatable body (40) is connected to a planetary wheel (38) on a planetary gear bearer (32) which is coupled to driving means (45) adapted to impart to the planetary gear carrier a rotative movement said planetary wheel (38) being in engagement with inner teeth on a fixed ring gear (36) the gearratio between said planetary wheel and said ring gear being selected so as to cause the glue transferring member (52) during the rotational movement of the rotatable body (40) to be directed towards, alternately, the glue-taking up station for taking up glue and the web of material (54) for delivery of the taken up glue.

The device as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the glue-transferring member consists of an elongated, thin bar (52) the surface plane of which is directed radially to the axis of revolution of the rotatable body (40) and the outer edge of which is parallel to the transverse direction of the web of material (54) at the glue transfer station.
3. The device as claimed in claim 2, characterized in that the outer edge of the bar (52) is toothed for transfer of an interrupted strand of lime onto the web of material (54).
4. The device as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the rotatable body consists of a cylindrical roll (40) having its one end nonrotatably connected with the planetary wheel (38) and its other end rotatably mounted in a disc (30) rotatably seated coaxially with the planetary gear carrier (32).
5. The device as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the glue-taking up station includes a glue-receiving plate (19) movable down into and up from a glue vat (20) and disposed to have its motion imparted by a driving mechanism (5, 22, 23) operating synchronously with the rotatable body (40).
'6. The device as claimed in claim 5, characterized in that the glue-receiving plate (19) in its uppermost position is located straight opposite to the surface (55) taking up glue of the glue-transferring members (52) and at a distance therefrom which substantially corresponds to the thickness of the layer of glue on the glue-receiving plate.

Claims (6)

1. A glue-transferring device for rapid transfer onto a web of material (54) moving in one direction during a work cycle of a strand of glue transversely to the direction of movement of said web, said device including at least one glue adsorbing surface (55) adapted to be moved between a glue-taking up station and a glue transfer station and formed on a glue-transferring member (52) mounted on a rotatable body (40), said glue-adsorbing surface (55) having a length, calculated in the axial direction of said rotatable body (40), corresponding to the length of the strand of glue, characterized in that said rotatable body (40) is connected to a planetary wheel (38) on a planetary gear bearer (32) which is coupled to driving means (45) adapted to impart to the planetary gear carrier a rotative movement said planetary wheel (38) being in engagement with inner teeth on a fixed ring gear (36) the gear ratio between said planetary wheel and said ring gear being selected so as to cause the glue transferring member (52) during the rotational movement of the rotatable body (40) to be directed towards, alternately, the glue-taking up station for taking up glue and the web of material (54) for delivery of the taken up glue.

The device as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the glue-transferring member consists of an elongated, thin bar (52) the surface plane of which is directed radially to the axis of revolution of the rotatable body (40) and the outer edge of which is parallel to the transverse direction of the web of material (54) at the glue transfer station.
3. The device as claimed in claim 2, characterized in that the outer edge of the bar (52) is toothed for transfer of an interrupted strand of lime onto the web of material (54).
4. The device as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the rotatable body consists of a cylindrical roll (40) having its one end nonrotatably connected with the planetary wheel (38) and its other end rotatably mounted in a disc (30) rotatably seated coaxially witH the planetary gear carrier (32).
5. The device as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the glue-taking up station includes a glue-receiving plate (19) movable down into and up from a glue vat (20) and disposed to have its motion imparted by a driving mechanism (5, 22, 23) operating synchronously with the rotatable body (40).
6. The device as claimed in claim 5, characterized in that the glue-receiving plate (19) in its uppermost position is located straight opposite to the surface (55) taking up glue of the glue-transferring members (52) and at a distance therefrom which substantially corresponds to the thickness of the layer of glue on the glue-receiving plate.
