579,003. Measuring surface-roughness. KAPELLA, Ltd., and REASON, R. E. Aug. 17, 1943, No. 13365. [Class 106 (ii)] In apparatus for measuring the surface-roughness of a body of circular section, a pick-up head carrying a stylus is caused to traverse a circular path, means responsive to relative movement between head and the stylus operating an indicating or recording instrument. A bar D, Fig. 1, is caused by known means to reciprocate in a casing A, the bar being moved for setting purposes by a cam A4. A supporting member E detachably fixed to the bar carries the pickup head B by means of two spring ligaments E2, E3 and a plate F. The stylus B1 engaging the test body C3 operates a known electromagnetic device controlling an indicator or recorder. A screw F3 in the plate F bears on a two-part radius bar G, G1, the lower end of the bar engaging a thrust block H, H1 adjustable in vertical slides H2 on a bracket H3 carried on the casing A. The bracket H3 is steadied by a foot H7. As the bar D is moved to the left, the radius bar G, G1 rocks anticlockwise and, through the ligaments E2, E3, causes the stylus to follow a convex path. The stylus can be moved in a concave path by arranging for the radius bar to' bear on the top of the screw F3. In a modification, the pick-up head is adjustable horizontally on the plate F. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the pick-up head B is attached to the supporting member E by a single spring ligament K and is pressed into contact with the radius bar G, G1 by a spring K1.
