Abstract

548,446. Gauging toothed gears. ERNST, D. July 18, 1941, No. 9126. Convention date, Sept. 19, 1940. [Class 106 (ii)] For examining the helix, the gear and a coaxial cylinder are held while a straight-edge element engaging the cylinder and a feeler engaging a gear tooth and operating a recording device are moved tangentially to the cylinder and parallel to the common axis, whereas for tooth contour, the feeler and straight-edge are at rest and the gear and cylinder moved parallel with the straight edge. The base 1 is provided with horizontal and vertical guides 2, 3. The horizontal guide 2 has a slide 5 moved by a screwed spindle 4 and carrying a track 6 for a transverse slide 7 moved by a screwed spindle 8. In a sleeve 9 of the slide 7 is a rotatable mounting mandrel 10 for the gear 11 to be tested the mandrel having also fixed to it a rolling cylinder 13. A slide 14 movable by a screwed spindle 16 over the vertical guide 3 carries a table 15, a feeler 17 and recording means 19, 20. The feeler 17 contacts the tooth flank to be examined and movement of the feeler is transmitted by multiplying leverage 18 to a scriber 19 recording on a drum 21 rotated by a cord 24 passing over a sheave 23. A straight-edge 25 frictionally engages the cylinder 13 under the constant pressure of a spring 27 acting on spindle 4. An arm 26 of the base 1 has a guide 261 in which the straight-edge 25 slides. The movement of the straight-edge 25 is controlled by a guide groove 28 in a disc 30 which is engaged by a member 29 on the part 25. The disc is rotatable and fixable in a holder 31 integral with the table 15. The diameter of the cylinder 13 is equal to that of the base circle of the helical gear 11 and when the slide 7 is moved parallel with the rule or straight-edge 25 the contacting point of the feeler 17 which is vertically above the edge of the rule describes an involate curve coinciding with the contour of the tooth. Deviations are transmitted to the feeler 17 and hence to the scriber 19 and are recorded on the paper on the drum 20 which is moved by attaching the cord 24 to the slide 7. To examine the helix, the disc 30 is set to the correct helix angle and the spindle 16 rotated, the cord 24 being attached to the base 1.
