Abstract
578,779. Electrically-actuated valves. MILES AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and HAYDEN, P. J. Jan. 4, 1944, No. 147. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXVII] A valve comprises an obturating member 5 moved by a wedge 8, the latter being controlled by solenoids 16, 17 or an electric motor-driven ram and actuating switch 21 controlling a lamp or other device to indicate when the valve is open. The valve piston carries a rubber &c. facing to seat against the end of a nipple 3 to which the outlet conduit is attached, it is pressed by a spring 7 towards the open position, and, at its lower end, it carries a'roller 9 to engage in a depression 11 in the wedge to prevent inadvertent movement of the latter. The wedge is attached to an armature 13 and runs on a roller 18. When solenoid 16 is energized, the valve is closed, and when solenoid 17 is energized, the valve is opened. The switch arm 21 is a permanent magnet spring-pressed to the left to close contacts 24, and it is opened by the attraction of a soft iron armature 19 carried by the wedge when the latter reaches its left-hand (valve-closed) position. To allow the escape of liguid which gets into the piston cylinder &c., holes are drilled in the wall of the piston and the armature 13 is formed with flats. According to the Provisional Specification, the wedge may be replaced by a manually or mechanically actuated cam.
