Abstract

640,599. Change-speed control. WAGNER ELECTRIC CORPORATION. March 16, 1948, No. 7901. Convention date, April 23, 1947. [Class 80(ii)] A device for automatically closing a manually actuated throttle valve 13 during gear changing, and then quickly partially opening the valve before the clutch is engaged and thereafter slowly continuing the opening movement of the valve, comprises a spring - loaded piston 5 operated to close the valve 13 by fluid under pressure supplied to a chamber 22 and admitted to the piston chamber 25 through the non-return valve 23 carried by a diaphragm 4. When the gear changing is completed, the pressure in chamber 22 is released and the diaphragm 4 and piston 5 immediately move to the right, causing a quick partial opening of the valve 13. The clutch is then engaged and a spring 10 slowly moves the piston 5 back to its initial position to complete the opening of the throttle valve, the liquid escaping from chamber 25 through a small bleed passage 24 in the valve 23. The supply and exhaust of pressure fluid to the chamber 22 is controlled by ball valves 32, 33 and a spring- loaded plunger 36. At the start of gear changing, a solenoid 39 is energized to move the plunger 36 to the right, opening the valve 33 to allow pressure fluid to flow from a pipe 41 through a pipe 27 to chamber 22 and allowing the valve 32 to close an exhaust passage 30 in the plunger 36. On completion of the gear changing, the solenoid 39 is de-energized and plunger 36 moved to the left by a spring 28, whereby the valve 33 is seated to cut off the pressure fluid supply and the chamber 22 is connected to atmosphere through the passage 30. A nut 12 adjusts the initial position of the piston 5.
