Abstract

974,009. Electromagnets. ALCO VALVE CO. Nov. 2, 1961, No. 39249/61. Heading H1P. [Also in Division H2] A liquid-damped, plunger type, solenoid having two chambers, one above the plunger and one below, the chamber below the plunger comprises a cup-shaped boot having freely flexible walls with the plunger fixed to the middle section and means being provided for providing a restricted liquid flow path between the two chambers. A control valve housing 10 with an inlet fitting 11 and two outlets 13, 14 is operated by raising or lowering a valve slider 67 by an electromagnet fixed to the top of the valve housing. The electromagnet comprises a coil 50 mounted on sleeves 51, 52 which fit on the plunger tube 43. The coil is surrounded by a yoke 53 of magnetic material which is clamped in position by nut 55. The top of the plunger tube 43 is blocked by a plug 44, which seals the end of the tube and carries a copper shading ring 45 and a coiled spring 57 which forces the plunger 56 downward. A slide holder pin 60 screws into the plunger 56 and clamps the flexible boot 40 to the plunger by flange 62. The edges of the boot 40 are sealed to the top plate 34 of the valve housing by a crimped ring 41. The plunger 56 in tube 43 permits the passage of fluid from chamber 64a to lower chamber 64b. The movement of the plunger is damped by the liquid which also prevents the boot from adhering to the plunger and lessens the vibration when the winding is energized. The boot is made of synthetic material or rubber which virtually exerts no force on the plunger.
