Abstract
578,049. Indicating devices. THOMAS, A. E. F. Jan. 6, 1944, No. 271. [Class 3 (ii)] [Also in Group X] A device for indicating the position of supplies &c. jettisoned from aircraft comprises a three- or four-legged pyramidal frame 1 which normally is folded up and carried in a tube 3 extending alongside the package &c. 4 thrown overboard. When the parachute first opens, the shock of retardation causes the frame 1 to slip out of the tube 3, and a spring 9 on a medial rod 8 by which the frame remains attached to the tube 3 through a cord 11 causes stretchers 5 to open out the legs 1 as shown. The extent of opening out is determined by a canvas triangle or quadrangle 10 attached at its corners to the legs 1, and this sheet acts as a kite which keeps the device away from the parachute during descent. When the ground is reached, two of the legs 1 will lie horizontally and one will stand upright. Each leg may carry an electric lamp 12 and a flag 13, the lamp automatically switching on when impact occurs, so that the location can be seen either by day or by night even if the supplies fall in scrub &c.
