Abstract
A tetrahedral balloon for collecting air at high altitudes (e.g. from 3000 to 33,000 metres) comprises an inflatable tube 3 forming a triangular frame, a flexible tube 7 extending from the plane of that frame to a fourth apex weighted by a metal strainer 15, and a flexible skin 1. At ground level before ascent the tube 3 is partially inflated, the remainder of the balloon being collapsed, the tube 7 being pulled inside-out through a rigid ring 11 as far as the strainer 15 which is held against the ring by a release device 17. This balloon is then suspended below a carrier balloon by cables 19, 43, 45 and lifted, the tube 3 stiffens, and to prevent over-inflation it is equipped with safety valves mounted on rigid vertical tubes 27 at the comers. The release device 17 acts after a time delay so that at an appropriate height the strainer 15 is released, and by its weight it pulls the balloon to the shape shown, drawing in the ambient air through the tube 7 and the strainer. The balloon is then released from the carrier balloon and allowed to,fall.
