Y d/mw M00551? 7 Patented May 5, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PARACHUTE TOY Jalmar Juhlin, Milwaukee, Wis.
Application December 12, 1934, Serial No. 757,203
3 Claims.
This invention relates to toy parachutes and more particularly to a type of parachute that may be. tossed into the air a considerable distance before it unfolds.
The object of my invention is to provide a toy parachute that may be folded into a very compact arrangement prior to being tossed into the air.
Another object of the invention is to provide a method of retaining the compact arrangement of the parachute while being tossed into the air and designed to disengage quickly and at the proper moment causing the parachute to unfold in its downward path.
Other and further objects of my invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art, from a consideration of the following description when taken in conjunction with the drawing, wherein Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of the parachute assembly complete in its open position, and
Fig. 2 shows a perspective View of the parachute in its folded position prior to being tossed into the air.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views and referring to the same, character In indicates the spreading portion of the parachute which is constructed of a light textile material, preferably silk or the like, there are threads I l, fastened to the portion II], at I2, and supporting a cylindrically shaped member I5, by means of fastenings at Hi, this member I5, is constructed of a pliable resilient material, such as rubber or the. like, that may be readily folded or rolled into a flat position and when released will again assume its original contour and shape. There is a flat ribbon like band l3, of any convenient length made of a textile material, attached on one end at M, to the member 15.
In operation the entire spreaded portion [0, of the parachute together with the threads H, are folded and compressed and the member I5, is flattened and wound around the folded parts, the band I3, fastened at M, on the member I5, is
wound around the entire arrangement and as the unit is tossed or thrown into the air and having reached its extreme height the ribbon I3, will unwind the member l5, and spring into its original cylindrical shape and. the weight of the falling member IE, will have a tendency to spread the portion [0, causing the entire unit to slowly descend while being carried along by the air currents, for the amusement of the person causing same to be thrown.
pended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States, is:
1. A toy comprising a parachute member attached to a tubular resilient member equipped with a band disposed to hold the unit in a folded position when the resilient tubular member en- U circles the parachute member.
2. An aerial toy comprising a parachute member attached to a weighted resilient tubular member disposed to encircle the unit, and a band employed to retain the entire unit in a folded position until released through pressure exerted by the resilient member.
3. In an aerial toy, the combination of a parachute member, a resilient tubular member fastened thereto, disposed to encircle the folded parachute member, and means for temporarily retaining the entire unit in a folded position while being tossed into the air.
