Abstract
A bituminous composition, capable of forming tough slabs and particularly suitable as a substitute for metallic protective plating consists of 10-20 per cent by weight of a natural bitumen or asphalt, or pitch from gasworks or low-temperature carbonization products, a siliceous or like aggregate consisting of approximately 60 per cent (of the total composition) of limestone and/or hydrated lime and approximately 10 per cent of grit, and a fibrous filler such as cotton waste or coconut fibre, together with a small amount of flux oil to ensure thorough admixture of the fibrous filler, as described in Specifications 577,975 and 577,977, unless a very soft bituminous base with a melting point of about 54 DEG C. is used. After mixing, the composition is consolidated into moulds by hand or by vibration. When used as armourplate substitute, a slab of the composition is formed and allowed to cool sufficiently to avoid mixing with a layer subsequently applied of a bituminous mass containing siliceous or igneous aggregates of larger size.
