1363706 Asphalt/sulphur materials SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 1 Oct 1971 [5 Oct 1970] 45790/71 Heading C3N A method of forming a building and/or constructional unit comprises bringing to a temperature of at least 260‹ F., e.g. 260-350‹ F., a mixture comprising elemental sulphur, asphalt and particulate inorganic aggregate, the weight ratio of sulphur to asphalt being at least 1 : 1, e.g. 2 : 1-5 : 1, and the amount of asphalt being at least 3À0%, by weight of the total mixture, introducing the hot mixture into a form or mould, agitating the mixture in the form or mould to consolidate said mixture and allowing the hot mixture to cool without the application of densification pressure thereto. The term "asphalt" is used throughout as an alternative to the expression bitumen. Specific examples are blown petroleum asphalt, soft and hard residual asphalt, gilsonite, tar and pitch. Mixtures of tar and pitch with asphalt may be used. The inorganic aggregate may be sand, stone, gravel or slag. Specific examples disclose compositions comprising (per cent by weight) 4À85% asphalt, 4À65% sulphur and crushed gravel (2); 4À45% asphalt, 7À5% sulphur and sand (3); and 6À0% asphalt, 12À2% sulphur and sand (4).
