Abstract

1468744 Foundry sand SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 1 April 1974 [3 April 1973] 14293/74 Heading C3N A process for the preparation of a foundry moulding sand comprises mixing with sand clay and water and an additive or additives which is or are at least partially gasified under the thermal conditions of the casting operation, wherein said additive or one of said additives is a powdered precipitation bitumen. The precipitation may be obtained by treating a residual petrol - eum fraction with propane or a blown bitumen. The precipitation bitumen may be mixed with coal dust or with another known foundry dust. A mixture of two or more different precipitation bitumens in powder form may be added. One or more bitumens not obtained by precipitation may be added in powder form. The mean particle size of the powdered precipitation bitumen is preferably less than 0À5 mm., e.g. 0À01- 0-15 mm. and the amount is preferably within the range 0À1-10% by weight. The moulding sand preferably comprises 2-8% by weight water and 5-12% by weight of bertonite clay. The powdered precipitation bitumen may be added to the moulding sand as a premix with at least part of the clay that is also to be added. Comparative Examples describe foundry sands containing coal dust, polystyrene powder, powdered petroleum resin and an anthracene oil.
