Abstract

1279614 Foundry mould composition containing asphaltenes SHELL INTERNA. TIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 18 Sept 1969 [4 Nov 1968] 52090/68 Heading C3N A method of preparing a foundry mould or core comprises gassing with CO 2 a formed mixture of a moulding sand, aqueous sodium silicate and asphaltenes. Preferred asphaltenes are precipitated by pentane from a residual fuel oil. The aqueous sodium silicate preferably has a SiO 2 : Na 2 O weight ratio of 1À5 : 1-3À5 : 1, resulting in a specific gravity at 20‹ C. of 1À45- 1-7. The asphaltenes can be partly replaced by granulated bitumen, coal tar pitch pellets or coal dust. The asphaltenes may either be premixed with the moulding sand before mixing with aqueous sodium silicate or pre-mixed with the aqueous sodium silicate before mixing with moulding sand. Comparative examples describe moulding sands bound with aqueous sodium silicate and gassed with CO 2 with no additive or granulated bitumen or coal tar pitch pellets used instead of the asphaltenes.
