[Class 61 (iii)] [Also in Group XXII] Relates to expanding-tools for setting inserts in bores, more particularly wire helices to form the operative part of a screw-thread, and consists in an elongated body with a number of jaws and a driver movable axially in the body to spread the jaws by means of a wedge end. The jaws may be threaded to suit the helix, may be plain, or may be square with sharp corners for use in removing helical inserts. The jaws 10 illustrated in modifications as two, three or four in number are flanged at 14 for retention in the end of body by a screw cap 18, and are held in contact with the wedge end 25 of the core end 26 by split spring rings 42, 44. When two jaws only are used, the flats 13 form the bases of channels, the sides of which overlap the sides of the wedge. A counterbore on the body receives a retracting spring 28 for the core abutting an integral or pinned on collar 30 thereon. The counterbore is closed by a screwed plug 34 locked by a grub screw 46 and tapped for a screw 37 that engages the end of the core to effect expansion as limited by adjustable lock-nuts 39. The collar 30 contacts the end 35 of the plug 34 to limit the contraction.. The body is knurled at 40 for grip whilst the screw is rotated by a spanner at 41.
