Abstract
736,008. Nuts. BESWICK, R. E. May 15, 1953 [May 19, 1952], No. 12651/52. Class 89(1). [Also in Group XXII] A quick-release nut comprises a housing 2 Fig. 3, and a number e.g., three, segments 7 which are internally screw-threaded and slidable in the housing to cause the segments to move towards or away from each other. The housing has polygonal, e.g. hexagonal, external and internal cross-sections, the internal hexagon at 3 being smaller than that at 4, parts 3 and 4 being connected by an inclined part 5. The segments are of similar form and are expanded by a spring-ring 8 in a groove 8a. The ring engages pins 6 which prevent the segments leaving the housing, The nut is pushed on to its associated screw to the desired position and the housing is then moved over the segments to move them into engagement with the screw threads. The nut may then be tightened with a spanner. The end faces 9b, Fig. 2, of the segments may project beyond the end of the housing whereby the segments will clamp the screw-threads when the nut is tightened against a work-face. The housing is made from an annular metal blank 9, Fig. 6, by fitting the blank on a mandrel 10, Fig. 5, of hexagonal cross section and forcing it through a die 11, the inlet angle being about 12¢ degrees. Strippers 21 remove the finished housing as the mandrel is drawn back. Specification 595,473 is referred to.
