870,946. Pretensioning nuts, bolts. KELLERMANN, R. Oct. 11, 1958, No. 32531/58. Class 89(1). In limiting the tension applied to a bolt or nut during tightening thereof, two annular-axiallystepped surfaces are provided on the bolt or nut or on a washer so that when the required bolttension is reached the surfaces become co-planar and the torque applied to the nut or bolt increases suddenly. The screw may comprise an elastically-deformable-head 1, Fig. 1 having axially-stepped surfaces 6a, 6b, the head being deformed so that the surfaces become co-planar when the required bolt-tension is obtained. A washer 5 may have similar stepped surfaces 5a, 5b. The surface 6b, Fig. 1a, may be bevelled to give a gradually-increasing resistance to deformation. In another form, a socket-screw-head may be radially-split to render it elastically-deformable, or a nut 23, Fig. 3, may have an internal groove 25 for this purpose. Alternatively, elastically-deformable washers may have axiallystepped surfaces such as 66, 67, Fig. 5. The frictional-coefficient of the surface which engages first may be reduced by surface-treatment &c., so that the tightening-torque will increase more suddenly when the second surface engages.
