Abstract

760,297. Locking nuts. WATERBURY PRESSED METAL CO. Oct. 21, 1954 [Oct. 23, 1953], No. 30361/54. Class 89 (1). A lock-nut formed from a piece of thin metal of substantially uniform thickness, comprises a central threaded boss 3, Fig. 1, and a peripheral flange 1 having spaced projections 6 which engage a workpiece 7, Fig. 4, and cause deformation of the flange to press the threads of the boss into binding contact with the threads of a co-operating bolt 8. The flange is polygonal, e.g. square, and the projections are formed by bending the corners away from the boss. The nut may be made of spring steel, in which case the projections will bite into the workpiece. When made of untempered metal, the nut may be tightened against the work, to cause binding of the threads, and then backed-off a part of a turn, thereby permitting relative rotation between the nut and work.
