A fastener assembly for exerting a clamping load against a workpiece comprises a nut 44 and bolt 30 of which one e.g. the bolt 30 is associated with a flange 37 which initially transmits a load from the bolt 30 to the workpiece and has a section 40 rupturable in shear in an axial direction when a clamping load of a predetermined value is exerted. Before and after rupture surfaces 42 and 43 respectively of the bolt bear on the workpiece, the head 32 being held stationary while the nut 44 is tightened by a torquemeasuring spanner 46 which enables a torque reading to be taken at the moment of rupture so that the nut can be tightened again until the same reading is obtained with the surface 43 engaging the workpiece instead of the surface 42. In other embodiments the flange and shear section are formed on the nut or on a washer associated with either the head of the bolt or with the nut. The separated collar may be removable as shown in Fig. 5 or it may be captive, Figs. 8, 12 (not shown).
