[Also in Group XXIII] A collapsible nut 30 for bolting together plates 36, 37 apertured to receive the nut comprises segments 52 angularly movable to collapse the nut for insertion in the aperture and held together by a resilient ring 64, heads 54 on the segments for engaging the plate 37 when the segments are expanded by a bolt 33 engaging screw threads in the segments, and a sleeve 31 for locating the assembly. The three or more nutsegments have tapered shanks 53, Fig. 2, and a hexagonal or splined periphery 56 for engaging a co-operating surface 57 on a collar in the bore of the sleeve 31. After insertion of the segments 52 in the sleeve 31, the holding ring 64 is positioned and co-operates with the collar 57 to prevent removal of the segments. To insert the sleeve and nut in the plate apertures, the nutsegments are pivoted about points 63 to close the heads 54 for passage through the apertures, the ring 64 expanding the segments as the heads emerge. Surfaces 55 on the segments may be knurled or serrated. The head of the sleeve may seat against the outer surface of plate 36, Fig. 7 (not shown), or be countersunk and knurled or serrated. Sealing rings 40, 43 are located beneath the bolt and sleeve heads, which may be recessed at 51, 44 to receive a hand-tool, Fig. 22 (not shown), the conical, threaded end of which may be used in the outer end of the nut to contract the inner end for insertion in or removal from the plate-apertures. In a modification. Fig. 11, the inner ends 77 of the nutsegments are bevelled, permitting press-snapping into the plate-openings. For thick plates, Fig. 15, the nut need not be keyed to the centring sleeve 78, a countersunk or projecting extension sleeve 82 being provided to which the nut is keyed, as before. Instead of an extension sleeve, a toothed &c. flange 79 on the centring sleeve 78 may broach the plate openings, locking the sleeve against rotation. For use in blind holes 90, Fig. 17, the segments 91 may have teeth 93 biting into the plate when the bolt is tightened. The bolt may have wings or an eye, Fig. 18 (not shown).
