Abstract

1383203 Chucks B O MORRIS Ltd 14 April 1972 [15 April 1971] 9569/71 Heading B3B A chuck of the kind in which a shank 1 has a throughway or socket 4 for receiving a tool holder 20 gripping a tool 22, and in which a locking sleeve 12 is movable to engage circumferentially spaced looking members 10 in a peripheral groove 24 in the tool holder 20, is characterized by the tool holder 20 having a frusto-conical shoulder 28 engageable with a frusto-conical face 16 in the shank 1, and the groove 24 having at least one frusto-conical side face 25, with the shoulder 28 being spaced from the groove 24 by a cylindrical portion 20, such that when the locking members are pushed radially-inwardly by the locking sleeve 12 they impart an axial thrust on the tool holder to bring the should 28 and face 16 into engagement, thereby to effect location of the tool holder in the shank at two axially spaced apart positions only, by means of the frusto-conical face 16 and the locking members 10. The locking members 10 may be balls or non-spherical wedges and the locking ring 12 may be screw threaded on the shank or may be slid axially. The tool holder 20 receives a screw threaded tool 22 and grips it by means of screws in bores 23. An adjustable end stop 30 is provided which is adjustable when the tool holder is in the shank 1.
