Abstract
1,261,100. Chucks. CHARLES CHURCHILL Ltd. 18 June, 1970 [18 July, 1969], No. 36296/69. Heading B3B. An expanding internal chuck comprises a central stem 10, upper and lower expanders 11, 12 having opposed conical faces which taper inwardly towards the stem, a plurality of cylindrical bars 13 surrounding the stem and having inclined surfaces in contact with the conical faces of the expanders, an expandable retaining ring 14 surrounding the bars and means for varying the spacing of the expanders on the stem. In one embodiment a screw 16 moves the upper expander 11. A flanged disc 17 can be inverted to increase the range of operation of the chuck. The retaining ring 14 may be a split ring or a helical spring. In an alternative embodiment the upper expander 11 is moved by a nut movable on a threaded end of the stem. A packed ring may be placed beneath the lower expander 12 to increase the chucks range of operation. A transverse eccentric may be rotated to move a sleeve relative to the stem to achieve final clamping.
