Abstract

1406811 Chucks BORG-WARNER GmbH [trading as STIEBER DIVISION] 17 Aug 1972 [20 Aug 1971 (2)] 38341/72 Heading B3B A workpiece holding device comprises an arbor 1 having a tapering surface, an adaptor sleeve 13 having tapering internal and external surfaces, and a workpiece holding sleeve 9 having an internal tapering surface, the adaptor sleeve 13 being mounted on the arbor and the sleeve 9 being expandable and contractable by movement along the adaptor sleeve, the workpiece holding sleeve 9 being made deformable by longitudinal slots extending from opposite ends thereof, and the taper angle of the tapering surface of the workpiece holding sleeve 9, of said tapering surface of the arbor, and of the surfaces of the adaptor sleeve, being identical whereby the adaptor sleeve has a constant wall thickness. The expansible sleeve 9 is moved on the arbor 1 by a bolt 4 screwed into a nut 5. The bolt 4 is retained in the sleeve 9 by a snap action connection between a collar 7 on the bolt engaging in a groove 8 in the said sleeve 9. The sleeve 9 is slit alternately from each end and is expansible to allow the collar 7 to enter the groove 8. The use of the adaptor sleeve 13 enables a range of different sized expansible sleeves 9 to be used on a common arbor 1. The adaptor sleeve 13 may be omitted for certain sizes of sleeve 9 as shown in the top half of Fig. 1.
