Abstract

576,378. Controlling clutches. VANNI, P. G. April 21, 1944, No. 7473. Convention date, April 5, 1943. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Groups XIX and XXVI] A metering pump 9, with inlet and delivery pressures approximately equal, is driven through a slipping clutch 6, 7, the pressure upon which is regulated by adjustable springs 11, 14, and/or pressure-controlled diaphragms. An electric motor 1 drives an axiallyslidable shaft 4 and the spring and diaphragm pressures are exerted on a plate 5, of the clutch, through pivoted arms 10, 13 and a rod 1'6. A recording meter 23 and a tachometer 24 are driven through bevel gearing. 'The outlet pipe from 19 is controlled by a valve. A single lever may replace the levers 10, 13. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which a driven pump 28 supplies a smaller pump 37, surplus fluid passing a byepass valve 57 and returning to a reservoir 56. The pressure on the clutch plate 35 is controlled by (a) delivery pressure in a chamber 46 acting on a diaphragm piston 48, and (b) the inlet pressure for the pump 37, acting on a diaphragm piston 50, as shown. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a peripheral 'ring of friction material which is pressed on by a pivoted member under action of a centrifugallyactuated weight, which increases the pressure of the member on the ring when the driving shaft is speeded up. This driving torque is opposed by a spring. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
