Abstract

667,018. Gas turbine plant. LUCAS, Ltd. J. Jan. 20, 1950. [Feb. 9, 1949] No. 3524/49. Class 110(iii). [Also in Group XXIX] Means for regulating the supply of liquid fuel to a jet propulsion engine, gas turbine or other prime mover comprises a valve q adapted to control a servo-mechanism and a spring-loaded movable member such as the diaphragm t for actuating the valve, the member being subject to the action of opposed fluid pressures one of the pressures being dependent on the speed of the prime mover and the other on the liquid fuel delivery pressure. As shown the fuel supply is regulated by a swash-plate pump comprising a body part b and a rotary part a driven by the prime mover. The part a has a radial passage 8 communicating with the pump inlet c whereby liquid fuel at a pressure proportional to the speed of the prime mover is delivered to a chamber 2 above the diaphragm. The chamber s below the diaphragm contains the valve closure q which is carried on a lever r attached at one end to the diaphragm t. The chamber s communicates with the pump's delivery passage f through a passage wand an adjustable throttle x and with the pump inlet c through a passage u with a restricted orifice v. The obliquity of the swash-plate is regulated as described in Specification 577,016, [Group XXIX], by a servo-mechanism comprising a spring- loaded piston h under the control of the valve q. The pressure in the chamber s is a fraction of the pump delivery pressure determined by the throttle x and the size of the orifice v. In a modification two diaphragms of different effective area are employed the space between the diaphragms being connected with the pump delivery by a passage having a throttle and a spill valve on the outlet side of the throttle, the chamber s being in free communication with the pump inlet. The diaphragm or diaphragms may be replacedby an equivalent piston. The servomechanism may control a fuel throttle or byepass valve instead of the pump swashplate. The control valve q and its actuating member may be remote from the servomechanism.
