Abstract

666,255. Gas turbine plant. LUCAS, Ltd., J. Jan. 20, 1950 [Feb. 9, 1949], No. 3523. Class 110(iii). [Also in Group XXIX] The flow of liquid fuel to a jet-propulsion engine or gas turbine is controlled by a liquid operated servo-mechanism under the control of means comprising a body part a containing a chamber and a pair of passages q, t, the passage t serving as an outlet from the chamber j and having a restricted orifice u, and the other passage q serving as a vent through which motive fluid from the servo-mechanism can pass into the chamber j under the control of a valve o located in the chamber and operated by a movable member such as the diaphragm k or an equivalent piston responsive to different liquid pressures. As shown the fuel supply is regulated by a swash-plate pump comprising a rotary part b containing one or more spring loaded plungers d. The part b has a radial passage w communicating with the pump inlet f whereby liquid fuel at a pressure proportional to the speed of pump is delivered to a chamber y above the diaphragm. The valve o is carried on a lever n actuated by the diaphragm k. The latter is loaded by a spring m. The obliquity of the swashplate is regulated by the servo-mechanism which comprises a spring loaded piston 2 in a cylinder r open at one end to the pump delivery passage g and at the other to a passage q. The two ends of the cylinder r are connected by a restricted orifice 6. The increased pressure in the chamber j due to the sudden opening of the valve o damps the control movement of the diaphragm. The servo-mechanism may control a fuel throttle or byepass valve instead of the pump swash-plate. The control mechanism may be separate from the pump and the servo-mechanism. Specification 577,016, [Group XXIX], is referred to.
