630,454. Supplying fuel to liquid-fuel burners. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and LAWRENCE, O. N. April 23, 1947, No. 10891. [Class 75(i)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXIX] In a device for regulating a pump supplying fuel to the burners of a jet propulsion turbine comprising a fluid-operated piston and cylinder in which the ends of the cylinder are in communication through a restricted orifice and one end has a valve controlled vent, a spring being provided in the vented end for urging the piston to the position for increasing pump output and the piston being moved in the opposite direction by the output pressure of the pump, the vent controlling means comprises a variable choke through which the pump outlet passes, means responsive to the pressure difference for actuating the vent valve, and means responsive to blower air pressure for adjusting the choke. Liquid fuel from the pump flows through a housing from an inlet 2, through an orifice 8, to an outlet 3, the orifice being adjustable in position by a capsule 14 responsive to blower air pressure. The pressures upstream and downstream of the choke are applied to a diaphragm 30 to operate a lever 25 and so actuate a valve 24 controlling the vent from the pump regulating cylinder. The piston of the regulating device controls the swash plate, &c. of the pump. The loading spring 28 of valve 24 may be thermally variable and so give a temperature control. In a modification, the choke is adjusted by the capsule 14 through a relay in which the stem of a piston actuating the choke constitutes a moving seat for a controlling valve carried by the capsule. A resilient connection may be provided between the choke and its actuating stem, and the choke may be adjusted by hand. A damping action on the capsule is provided by admitting liquid to the capsule chamber under the control of a float valve. A non-return valve prevents the entrance of liquid into the air pipe.
