Abstract
625,055. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., CHAMBERLIN, R. H. D., WYNNE, C. H. L., and SKELLERN, J. Sept. 30, 1946, No. 29112. [Class 135] Apparatus for metering the fuel supply to a gas turbine for an aircraft of the kind driving a compressor supplying air for combustion and an airscrew, the blades of which can be automatically adjusted by a governor controlling the speed of the turbine, comprises a metering orifice F formed by fixed and slidable cylinder liners H, K respectively, and the aperture L<SP>1</SP> in a hollow piston L manually adjustable by the pilot through a lever P<SP>3</SP> connected to a piston valve P controlling a servomotor R, which sets the airscrew governor S and formed on an extension of the piston L, the gap between the liners being controlled by a Bourdon tube K<SP>3</SP> connected with a thermometer in the air inlet to the compressor. The fuel passes under pressure from a tank A through a filter A<SP>1</SP> and a pipe A<SP>2</SP> to a rotary pump B, e.g. of the kind described in Specifications 577,016 and 583,487, and thence via a pipe D to the chamber G<SP>1</SP> from which it flows through the metering orifice F and a pipe H<SP>3</SP> to the turbine burners. The fuel is controlled by a swash-plate B<SP>1</SP>, the inclination of which is regulated by a servomotor piston B<SP>3</SP>. The position of the piston is dependent on the pump discharge pressure in the pipe D and the leakage through a valve B<SP>5</SP> controlled by a diaphragm B<SP>6</SP> subject on its upper side to the pressure in the pump casing B' and on its underside to that in the fuel supply pipe A2, and a valve E<SP>1</SP> controlled by a lever C<SP>5</SP> regulated by a bellows C, subject to the pressure drop across the metering orifice; and a spring C' loaded by a lever M having a slot engaged by a pin M<SP>4</SP> on the piston-rod of a servomotor, the fluid supply to which is controlled by a valve M<SP>5</SP> actuated by an evacuated bellows O exposed to the air intake or ram pressure. The setting of the airscrew governor is effected by the servomotor R through levers Q<SP>1</SP>, Q' and a link Q<SP>6</SP> connected to an adjustable arm S<SP>1</SP>. The action of the servomotor R is delayed by the throttle valves T, T<SP>1</SP>.
