Abstract

646,507. Hot-air engines. LUCAS, Ltd., J. Jan. 10, 1948, No. 825. '[Class 7(i)] [Also in Group XXIX] Apparatus for controlling the supply of liquid fuel to the combustion chamber of a hot-air engine and also the amount of motive air in the engine comprises a centrifugal fuel pump a, means such as the Bourdon tube e, responsive to the pressure of the motive air in the engine, for controlling the flow of fuel from the pump to the combustion chamber, and further means such as the valve k actuated by the pressure of liquid fuel under the control of a valve t responsive to an engine operating condition for controlling the amount of motive air within the system. The pump a is driven by the engine and supplied at constant head from a tank 3. The Bourdon tube e actuates a fuel valve b. The valve k is actuated by a spring-loaded piston m exposed through a pipe s to the pressure of liquid fuel controlled by the valve t. The valve t may be moved to connect the pipe s with the pump discharge through a passage 8 or with the pump suction through a passage 7. As shown the valve t is positioned in accordance with engine speed by means of diaphragm v actuated by the pressure difference across the pump against a spring w. Alternatively the valve t may be positioned by an engine-driven centrifugal governor. The valve k operates to admit pressure air to the motive air system, to which it is connected by a passage h by means of a passage i or to connect the system to the atmosphere by a passage j. Manual control of the valve k and therefore of the fuel valve b is effected by a lever r acting on the loading spring abutment p through a cam q. The valve k may alternatively or additionally be controlled by a valve responsive to the temperature in the combustion chamber. Where speed control of the fuel supply is already operative, a valve 10 in the fuel pipe is controlled according to the temperature of the combustion chamber.
