Abstract

731,213. Rotary meters. WALLACE & TIERNAN, Inc. May 11, 1953 [May 10, 1952; April 13, 1963], No. 13155/53. Class 110 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] A rotary meter, Fig. 1, comprises an impeller 12 through which fluent material other than gases is fed and means for recording the rate of flow of said material which is responsive to the torque on the impeller shaft, the latter being driven at a constant speed about a vertical axis. The impeller is driven by a synchronous electric motor 24 through gears 25, 27, 28 journalled in a frame 30. The gear 27 is rotatably mounted in a lever 40 that is pivoted about an axis 41. The lever is coupled to the piston of a piston and cylinder unit which is connected to a source of pressure through a conduit 56 having a flow control valve 55 and a branch line 58 leading to a gauge 60. Movement of the lever is effected against the action of an adjustable spring 50 (see Fig. 2, not shown), in response to the variations in the flow of material supplied to the impeller 12, the lever in turn controlling the supply of pressure fluid to the piston and cylinder unit. Balancing may be effected by air under sub-atmospheric conditions or liquid under pressure in which case the piston is preferably replaced by a bellows. In a modification (see Figs. 7 and 8, not shown), the fluent material is fed through an impeller 120 and then passes through the space between members 101, 106 to the outlet conduit 103. The torque on the impeller is transmitted to the motor 116 and hence to its stator which is rotatably mounted for movement as a unit with a supporting plate 113; the latter, together with a bearing roller 125 and a lever 126, being moved in the counterclockwise direction by said torque. The movement of the plate 113 is transmitted through a coupling 147 to a lever 149 and operates a valve 144 in a closing direction (see Fig. 8, not shown). Closing of the valve increases the pressure in a conduit which is connected to the recorder and to a chamber 132, thereby contracting a bellows 136 and applying through a link 143, and a balancing torque in the clockwise direction on the lever 126.
