Abstract

575,982. Gas meters. METROPOLITAN GAS METERS, Ltd., SPARKES, J. G., and NEWTON, L. N. April 28, 1944, No. 8042. [Class 54] In a diaphragm gas meter, the valves and valve-plate, Fig. 2, the lower and upper valve chambers, Figs. 1 and 3 respectively, and the connections between the valves and the flag rods and index mechanism are all arranged above the top of the casing containing the diaphragms, the valve plate and the lower and upper valve chambers being formed of plastic or metal as separate removable superposed units to provide ready access for cleaning, repair, or replacement. In the form shown the units are formed as plastic mouldings having aligned lugs 6 to receive securing screws, the lower moulding 1 having further lugs 3, 4, to serve as securing means for an enclosing cover and to carry the index mechanism, and bosses 28, 29 through which the flag rods extend. The upper faces of the lower and middle mouldings are recessed at 7 to receive the lower edges of the moulding above, while the lower moulding 1 is also recessed around its edges 8 to receive the enclosing cover. The valve plate moulding is shaped to provide a gas inlet 9 having a port 9a, four chambers 10, 11, 14, 15 communicating through ports 12, 13, 16, 17 in the lower moulding 1 with the meter measuring chambers, and a further chamber 18 which is connected by port 26 with the gas outlet chamber 25 and provides, in co-operation with the upper moulding 19, Fig. 3, a path to the lower valve chambers 10, 11, 14, 15 through the three-port sliding valves 20. The upper moulding 19 is formed with a lug 31 to receive the spindle of the index mechanism and with a boss 33 to carry a packing gland for the crankspindle of the valve mechanism. In a modification, the lower units 1, instead of being a separate moulding, may be constituted by the top wall of the casing enclosing the diaphragms. Specification 575,981 is referred to.
