575,967. Vacuum chucks. JOHNSON, J., and COMBINED OPTICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 5, 1944, No. 6396. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A chuck or collet for use in lathes, for machining plastics to produce lenses, and in which the work is held by suction, comprises a centring-piece 14 carried in the lathe head 13 and having secured thereto a collet 15, the piece 14 having a central port 16. On the collet is a rim 18 flared slightly to facilitate the introduction of a work blank 19, and in the face of the collet is a rubber washer 20, near the periphery, and a central rubber washer 21 around the port 16. A tube 24, passing through the head 13, is secured to the piece 14 by screws 25, and at its rear end is coupled to a valve 26, operable by a handle 27 so that the tube may be connected to a suction pump or to atmosphere or source of air pressure. For a square work blank, the collet has a circular plate with a square orifice secured to the face, and for blanks with convex back faces, the collet has a deep recess, the washer 20 being located in a groove so as to contact the blank near its periphery. The cutting-tool 22 is mounted in a holder 23. Specifications 162,216, 336,919, [both in Class 60], and 556,743, [Group XI], are referred to.
