Abstract

575,169. Spanners. WOOD, R. Jan. 3, 1944, No. 31. [Class 61 (iii)] A spanner of the type in which the shank is adjustable in a plane at right angles to that of the jaws, has a boss for the jaws pivoted in a fork end of the shank and serrations co-operating with a locking means. As shown, the jaw 1 is mounted in the fork end 4 of the shank 2 by means of a pivot bolt 10. A boss 3 has grooves 5 engaged by a spring-pressed ball catch housed in a slot 6 in the shank. In a modification, the boss has a perforation housing the ball catch, which co-operates with grooves on the pivot bolt. In another modification, one end of the boss has serrations which coact with similar serrations on an inner surface of the fork end when the pivot bolt is tightened up. The invention may be applied to spanners in which the distance apart of the jaws is adjustable.
