Abstract

573,852. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Oct. 13, 1943, No. 16778. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] An electron discharge device comprises an evacuated envelope 13 containing .an anode 15 and a thoriated cathode 17 and gettering means comprising heating means 51 for evaporating a metal at a controlled rate. The gettering material may be barium and the evaporation takes place in a space 49 enclosed by a head 43 and a skirt 47 to prevent the barium from depositing on the working surfaces of the cathode and anode. The circuit shown below the envelope enables the vacuum in the envelope to be measured as with an ionisation gauge. A battery 69 under the control of a rheostat 73 sets up a fixed electron flow between the cathode and anode which will cause an amount of ionisation in the tube proportional to the degree of vacuum. The head 43 is biassed to collect these ions by battery 75 and the rate at which they are collected, which will be a function of the vacuum, is given by ammeter 77.
