Abstract

728,114. Electric tests and measurements. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 24, 1953 [Aug. 22, 1952], No. 23297/53. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (a)] In a vapour detecting device of the type described in Specification 648,367, in which the presence of the vapour causes an ionic discharge between a heated electrode and a collector electrode, amplification is obtained by making the said collector electrode the cathode of a thermionic valve. The filament electrode 3 is positive with respect to tubular electrode 7, and when it is heated in the presence of halogen vapour, as described in Specification 725,515 an ionic discharge occurs. This is collected by electrode 7, which has an external coating of emissive material, and also acts as a thermionic cathode, cooperating with anode 5 and control grid 4, and heated by filament 3. Variations in cathode potential caused by the collection of the ions will cause corresponding variations in the anode current, indicated by an external instrument 21. If current gain is not important, control grid 4 may be omitted. The hollow cathode 7 extends through the tube envelope at one end, and is closed at the other end, as at 8, so that the vapour admitted is isolated from the interior of the thermionic discharge space.
