Abstract

573,824. Sidecar attachments. PRATT, F. H., and BUTLER, C. Aug. 23, 1943, No. 13718. [Class 136 (iii)] Means for pivotally attaching a sidecar undercarriage 7 to the frame of a bicycle comprises a stirrup-shaped member 9 adapted to straddle the rear wheel 4 of the bicycle and engage the rear wheel hub spindle 5, one limb 9a of the stirrup carrying spaced lugs 14, 15 at the rear of the hub spindle to receive the pivot 18 of the undercarriage 7 and a part 9b extending upwardly and clamped to the seat stay 3 of the bicycle to maintain the pivot 18 horizontal. Lugs on the ends of the stirrup 9 take over the ends of the spindle 5 and are secured by sleeve nuts 11, one lug being integral with a steady plate 12 joined to the part 9b and having a slot 13 by which it is clipped to the seat stay 3. The downwardly projecting lug 14 on the steady plate 12 and the Jug 15 projecting from the part 9a carry between them a spindle 16 on which is mounted by ball bearings 19 the hinge barrel 18 united by cranked arms 7a to the chassis frame 7 which is supported by a road wheel 8. The sidecar can be removed from the bicycle without disturbing the attachment means 9 by removing nuts 17 on the spindle 16. The stirrup 9 may engage nuts having threaded extensions coaxial with the spindle 5 of the rear wheel and be held by auxiliary clamping means.
