Abstract

573,582. Dry cells. SIEMENS BROS. & CO., Ltd., EDWIN, C. F., and WILLIS, R. J. Nov. 26, 1943, Nos. 19790/43 and 22601/44. [Class 53] A dry or inert cell for use in warm climates has a preformed container 5 of synthetic plastic, for example, polythene, which is unaffected by water and electrolyte, the zinc electrode 3 being formed of zinc strip with its ends butted. Inside the electrode 3 is the dolly 1 surrounded by a wrapping 4 of paper, which may absorb the electrolyte or carry dry crystals attached to a gum layer. The container extends above and below the electrode and has a bottom 8 from which the dolly is spaced by projections 12 and which is formed with a rib 10 on either side of which are filling or vent holes 11. After the cell has been filled with electrolyte or water a wad or like seal may be formed over the hole 11. The upper end of the cell is sealed by a cork washer 13 inserted in the end of the zinc electrode and supporting a plastic seal 6 of the same material as the container. The washer may be omitted, the seal 6 being then disposed clear of the ends of the electrode 3. The zinc electrode 3 has a terminal lug 7. A group of cells, which are preferably of square cross-section may be assembled in a battery container and sealed with a wax or like seal which may be flowed on without undue softening of the plastic in the cells. The first Provisional Specification states that the casing may be formed of polystyrene.
