Abstract

612,931. Batteries. SMITH, C. G. June 7, 1946, Nos. 17319 and 24748. [Class 53] The positive electrodes of an accumulator having a zinc negative electrode are immersed in jellified acid electrolyte, the zinc electrode being in liquid electrolyte in a porous envelope. The positive electrodes with the jelly electrolyte may also be enclosed in porous envelopes. Fig. 2 shows an accumulator cell in which all the electrodes are enclosed in envelopes formed by porous partitions 17. The envelopes containing the positive electrodes 11 and jelly electrolyte 18 are sealed with insulating material 19, the remainder of the cell being filled with free acid 21 which fills the central envelope containing the zinc electrode 12. The partitions 17 may be held in position by insulating strips 16 which pass round three sides of the cell or the strips may be grooved to receive the partitions and electrodes. Fig. 6 shows a construction in which the positive electrodes are provided with lugs 23 which engage in grooves in the strips 16, thereby allowing the jelly electrolyte to completely surround the electrodes. The negative electrode may be made of a material coated with zinc and the porous envelopes may-be made of wood, ceramic material or fabric such as cotton webbing.
