Abstract
580,676. Galvanic batteries. BURNDEPT, Ltd., and RICHARDSON, R. P. Dec. 13, 1944, Nos. 25016/44 and 3827/45. [Class 53] The casing of an inert dry battery consists of a moulding of a plastic material such as a phenolic synthetic resin having compartments for the separate cells, each compartment being provided for the admission of water with one or more openings which extend through the material to the surface of the moulding and may be in or near the lower ends of the compartments. The battery may be a high-tension battery for use in a portable wireless apparatus and where a low-tension battery is also required 'this may be built into a similar plastic moulding which may be fitted to the casing of the high-tension battery. Fig. 8 'shows a high-tension and a lowtension battery fitted together in which the high-tension battery comprises a moulded casing 1 having compartments of cylindrical or other shape each of which is provided with one or more filling openings 11 in the bottom. A projection 9 on the base of each compartment supports the dolly of the' cell, the negative electrode consisting of a zinc sheet 8 bent into cylindrical form and resting on a ledge 7 formed on the wall of the compartment. A ledge near the top supports a closing disc 6 above which is a sealing of bitumen &c., 37. After the battery has been filled with water the openings 11 are closed by a wax filling and a waterproof tape 13. Connecting sockets may be moulded into the plastic casing or they may be moulded into a separate insulating body 24 accommodated in a compartment 18 as shown in Fig. 7. The body 24 is secured in place by screws 22 and the sockets 21 project through-openings 19 in thecasing 1. Until the battery'is required'for use the sockets are covered by a rubber disc 25 pressed down by a screw 23. A low-tension battery comprises a plastic moulding 26 having two sets of cell compartments opening at opposite ends of the moulding the filling passages being brought out to one of the larger faces'of the casing. The compartments contain battery elements similar to those of the high-tension battery and the casing fits within the rim of the high-tension battery casing, the two batteries being secured together by screwed studs and nuts 31 and protected by steel casings 34 sealed by waterproof tape 35. Cardboard packing sheets 36 ensure a tight fit of the batteries in the casings.
